The Monkey’s Paw has three main parts. All three are wishes made by Mr. White. The family is sitting around the fire, Mr. White and his son are playing chess as Mrs. White is knitting (Jacobs 4). Just at that moment, Sergeant Major Morris, a friend of the family who had been serving in India arrives for a visit. This paper is an expanse on the Jacob’s use of magic, fate and wishes in the story’s happenings that create conflict and an ending that the reader is unprepared for. The monkey’s paw is a gothic tale. The tale is about a family of three named the Whites. When the Whites are given a magical monkey’s paw by an old family friend – Sergeant Major Morris - they also inherit three wishes. Herbert, the descendant of the family takes the paw for granted and had no certainty in the paw. That day they make their first wish for two hundred pounds, nothing happens. That night, after the old couple had departed to bed, Herbert sees a simian-like face in the fire. The following day, Herbert, goes to Maw and Meggins, where he works. In the meantime a worker from the Maw and Meggins cotton mill comes to visit Herbert’s parents and delivers devastating news. He claims that Herbert had been crushed by machinery whilst working which led to his death, but they were entitled to compensation of two hundred pounds. The couple are absorbed by grief and after the funeral Mrs White suggests that they use the monkey’s paw to wish Herbert back to life. Mr White is very hesitant to do this, but after a lot of persuasion and fuss from his wife he agrees to the idea. After making the wish the couple retire to bed. Like Abbey, The Monkey Wrench Gang is realizes their freedom is directly tied to the survival of wilderness. They realize that, “We can have wilderness without freedom. The Lion, indignant and outraged, demands an apology of the Elephant, who refuses and then trounces the Lion. After falling for Mangan's sister, he no longer is that innocent boy. The boy begins to lose focus on everything including school and only has one thing in his mind, which is the girl of his dream. He emits an immense attention towards her very existence that occupied as a way of escaping his discouraging life in the city of Dublin. Mangan's sister asks him a question for the first time as he stood there completely dazed, it had appeared to be a miracle something so unexpected. This moment was so astounding and breath taking that the narrator forgets to respond. Not knowing how to express all of his feelings towards her, he then decides to do some in the form of a gift. The boy's uncle was an obstacle that obstruct his path to the bazaar.

For instance, he was the one who owned the paw in the first place, allowed Mr. White to keep it, and even told them how to use it, stating on page 377, "Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud."
