The Seminole Indians Everyone loves to think about Indians in a stereotypical way or assume that they are all crazy worshippers of land or rocks. Everyone thinks they are all the same. They probably can’t even name a legit tribe. The Indians lost their home to the settlers, and many people never think about it how strong these Indians actually are. In fact, an Indian tribe called the Seminoles are very strong. Settled in Florida as far back as 10,000 B.C (“Seminole Indians”). However, the settlers then settled making the Creeks move to Florida because they want to live in peace with no conflicts, and eventually earning the name Seminoles which means “wild people” (17). While living in Florida, black slaves ran from their owners and even became apart of the Seminole Tribe (17). However, many Seminoles were captured as slaves, others died from diseases, or left the tribe and enter another (“Seminole Indians”). “This event had a serious affect on the tribe, as it changed their population, location, and many believe it is where the name Seminole came from: "the people whom the Sun God does not love." Many stayed in Florida, but they were forced to work for money by helping the settlers farm the land” (“Seminole Indians”). By the 1821, the US troops were under the command of Andrew Jackson. He was in search of the riches in Florida ("Seminole Tribe of Florida - Culture, Chickee."). He pushed for the Indian Removal Act and successfully passed it making it a constant must flee situation for all Indians. This situation made way for new land in the Southeast. After the act, Seminoles were hunted down by the US troops causing them to flee resulting in drastic changes in home and shelter. The chickee house is made with cypress logs and palmetto palms that are intertwine together by vines or thin ropes. However, the chickee does not consist of any walls because living in the tropical, walls are not necessary. The chickee homes has large diameter posts to support the roofing with a flat wooden platform that is raised three to four inches above the ground (“Chickee”). However, if there was to be storm the occupants will use a tarps made of hide or cloth to cover the chickee mount or frame to keep themselves dry (“Chickee”).
