Respect means to show regard or consideration for someone, or to hold in esteem or honor. Without respect in a society there would not be a social hierarchy, which would cause chaos in schools, within the government, and the workplace. Self- Respect is a key point in having respect for others, while it can also determine how you are treated, and how happy you are in life. Respect is something you have to earn, and can be easily lost. Respect is gained through honesty and trust, and breaking someone’s trust or not being truthful is how respect can be so easily lost. Respect is a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important or serious, and should be treated in an appropriate way. While fear is something that causes feelings of dread or apprehension; something a person is afraid of. Gangs often fight for respect but usually all they gain is fear between one another. Domestic Abuse is the same way, the abuser demands respect, but all they gain is fear within the individual, this may make the abuser feel as though they have gotten respect, but someone is hurt, and respect it not earned that way. As a child I often feared my father. My parents were divorced so generally only saw him on Sundays. It seemed with him there was always ultimatums where if we didn't pick up our toys before we left he would throw them away, if we acted out in the store we would be spanked with the belt or yardstick when we got back to the house, if we were to do something he considered “stupid” he would smack us over the head. He often called us names and or “put us to work” while we were with him, it was never just going with him to spend time together, there always seemed to be something, some kind of work for us to do. I never felt respect towards my father, because he did not treat us well, but I have always respected my mom because she treated me right, even though there was consequences when I did something inappropriate, I was never afraid she would hurt me.
