Pelayo and his wife have an ugly and ordinary life just like the health of the angel when he arrived in their courtyard. At the beginning of the story, Marquez describes the miserable life of Pelayo and his family: “On the third day of rain they had killed so many crabs inside the house that Pelayo had to cross his drenched courtyard and throw them into the sea, because the newborn child had a temperature all night and they thought it was due to the stench. The world had been sad since Tuesday.” (p.76) This quote explain pretty well the ugly and ordinary life of the characters. They have to kill crabs inside their house, because it’s raining and they don’t have enough room to do that at a different place. They have a sick newborn and it is consistently raining. When the angel arrived in Pelayo’s courtyard, the angle was in a despicable condition. “ He had to go very close to see that it was an old man, a very old man, lying down in the mud, who, in spite of this tremendous efforts, couldn’t get up, impeded by his enormous wings.” (p.76) Inside those two quotes you could see that Marquez is doing another comparison. Doña Guadalupe is a very protective woman, which is extremely speculative when it comes to her children, this is especially true when it comes to boys, because she has not gone this far only for all of her hard work to be ruined by a no good boy. This shows how protective she is, she loves her family, and especially her kids so much that they themselves must pass her test before being able to pass on to her children. “The newborns were moving, squirming, reaching out for life. While lost in family chaos, he turned back to his addiction of drugs crashing his dream of a perfect family dynamic. Though his dream became a nightmare, he was able to achieve it through one core trait where his inner strength help drive him to not give up his dream of seeing his mother. This signifies that if a person is willing to work hard to achieve their dream through diligence, it can be met. Though the outcome may not be what one hoped for, being able to say you accomplished something is soul-pleasing. His success in making it to the U.S. regardless of many downfalls satisfies one missing piece in his broken puzzle of a life.
