Section 1: About your Degree Program and Specialization The degree program I am enrolled in is Health Information Management. With this degree I will build skills and gain valuable insight into the management of health records. Not only will this degree prepare me for managerial positions but also with expertise needed for the technology and the business aspect of health care. As healthcare grows so does the number of medical records. In order to protect these records a HIM degree will ensure you are familiar with information systems technology, data security, and privacy management. It continuously gets updated to include any procedures you received, lab results, medication prescribed, doctors notes, and diagnosis. Within this job you will protect, review, analyze, and acquire these records.
HIM professionals will classify diseases and treatments to ensure a standard is set for legal and financial uses in healthcare. They are trained on the latest information management technology and are vital to the daily operations management of electronic health records for patient care, population health statistics, and billing purposes. All while maintaining the confidentiality of patients’ health records and information.
This degree program will prepare me to be a medical coder by teaching me the needed skills to prepare me for the American Academy of Professional Coders certifications. I will need a certification such as Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), and Certified Professional Coder-Payer (CPC-P) to give me the competitive edge in the job market.

- This will help me better prepare for employment. If I have a good understanding of what is expected I can get the degree, study for the certification, or buy the new business outfit that is required to wear.
2) Could you refer me to someone else for more information about opportunities in this field? - This way I have two personal stories to go off on rather than one. One may love everything about the job, only does the minimal amount of work required and does not strive for more. The other may have a different outlook as they are looking to be in a managerial position and states it’s a stressful job because they put so much into it.
3) What qualities do you feel are most important in your work and why? – This will help me determine what I need work on. One quality in my current career may not meld with the new one. If I am unfamiliar with the suggested quality, I can work on strengthening those needed
