Everyone has kept a secret, some minor, some major, and some that may have caused terrible things to happen. Secrets don’t always lead to tragedy, but in some cases they can turn someone's world upside down. This is shown in the story “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. In the story Romeo and Juliet having a secret marriage; and as a result Romeo is banished, and the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Romeo, and Juliet occur. All of this happens due to one secret, When Tybalt wants to kill Romeo, he is confronted by Mercutio in an attempt to protect his friend Romeo, since Mercutio feared for Romeo’s life. This results in the death of Mercutio after a sword fight between himself and Tybalt, but his death could have been prevented if the marriage was known about. He got banished because he and Tybalt got in a swordfight due to the anger between them. They wouldn’t be mad enough to fight if Tybalt would have known that Romeo was his brother-in-law. This is stated by Friar Lawrence himself when he says, “I married them; their secret wedding day was the day Tybalt died. His untimely death caused the bridegroom to be banished from the city.” (281) Since Romeo killed Tybalt, he was banished; if Tybalt didn’t fight Romeo because he knew they were related, then Romeo would not end up killing Tybalt and being banished from Verona and never able to come back to see Juliet. To summarize, secrets can cause very horrible events to happen. In Romeo and Juliet this is shown through the banishment of Romeo and deaths of Mercutio, Paris, Tybalt, Romeo and Juliet as a result of Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage.
