There are certain events in one’s life that cannot be explained, for recondite information is present and difficult to perceive. Nevertheless, science always makes an effort, and usually succeeds, to find answers and logical explanations. While the short story “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne holds a more metaphorical and symbolic meaning, there is a possibility for the concluding incident to have a scientific explanation. The story tells us the tale of a scientist named Aylmer and his wife, Georgiana, who had a birthmark the size of a tiny hand upon her left cheek. Said mark, while found beautiful and endearing by some, slowly became a hindrance to Aylmer, who became obsessed with it for believing it a sign of her human imperfection. …show more content…

The first elements presented were the influences that Aylmer subjected his wife to. Georgiana was shown various imagery and illusions, and pondered if the fragrances of the room she resided in or the food she consumed had somehow influenced her being. Factors such as influence through aroma, ingestion and optical illusions may alter one’s brain’s chemistry. It was also mentioned how she felt a strange sensation, a half painful, half pleasurable tingling in her heart. Then came a throbbing sensation to the mark, which made Georgiana restless. When following Aylmer to his laboratory, and finding out how dangerous the experiment was, she became fully aware of the greater possibility of death and came to accept it. Georgiana was also partially kept in isolation, save for her husband’s visits and her venture to the laboratory. Both the awareness of one’s chance of death and isolation can alter one’s mood towards a negative state and this, although not necessarily perceivable on the outside, can affect one’s health and the suppression of one’s immune system. All of the components already mentioned could have had direct effects on Georgiana’s passing. Scientifically wise, the reader was not offered any details regarding the creation of the potion that rid Aylmer’s wife of her birthmark.
