Sci-Fi Story Proposal: Transmissions from the Nearest Star

By 2022, the limit of humanity has surpassed the boundaries of its Solar System; unprecedented technology has allowed the spaceship SSE Invictus and its brave crew of six strong to begin to explore the Milky Way Galaxy. They know that it won’t be an easy journey, and they know that it won’t be a short one, but it will be worth it— for science, and for the glory of mankind. As time passes, however, the crew of the SSE Invictus start to become aware of how the trip is changing them; not just mentally, but physically as well, like space itself is feeding off them (which is illogical, all things considered: it’s really the effects of microgravity on their physiology, since their bodies have evolved to thrive in Earth’s gravity). They’re too far gone into space for the SSE Invictus to be recalled to prevent permanent damage, so at the end of it all, however, they will have to ask themselves: are they willing to burn their eyes for this mission?

These organs are used to support the body in the constant pressure of Earth’s gravity, but due to the microgravity conditions in space make these structural organs almost useless. The weightless environment also causes poor posture on the part of astronauts, and standing straight takes considerable effort (Mann, 2012). NASA has found out, in an evidence report published in 2015, that this is an atrophic response on the part of the muscles, to adapt to the reduced gravity. Skeletal muscle attrition was also common in the expeditions they studied, and several MRI results even confirmed that the atrophy continues during longer exposures to
