DeKalb County school principals were given directives by the Superintendent to form a wellness committee and implement a School Wellness Policy (SWP) in each school by year 2006. Unfortunately, the mandate did not take precedence until 2014. Because of the overwhelming epidemic of childhood obesity, all school systems in America were required to implement a local School Wellness Program, as directed initially by The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, which required all schools receiving federal funding to create a local SWP, and reiterated in 2010 by President and Michelle Obama in the Healthy, Hungry, Free Kid Act.

It captures the internal and external challenges in school districts that are possibly hindering or promoting implementation of principles of the district-wide School Wellness Policy. Due to the associated risks between obesity and chronic disease, the overall health and wellness of children and adolescents has become a priority among public health officials. Local Education Agencies, nutrition plays a major part in the lives, health and wellness of students. In most instances, schools are considered one of the best environments where students can learn about overall good health and wellness and proper nutrition. Therefore, all LEA’s have an obligation to create, develop and implement a successful child wellness plan to combat childhood obesity and major chronic illnesses. Students must receive solid support and assurance of all major stakeholders such as parents, principals, teachers, school nurse, counselors and the local community to obtain a successful outcome. The stakeholders must join forces to create an environment that is conducive not only for academic learning but also total health and wellness. In order to achieve a positive result in the school wellness initiative, all major stakeholders must come together collectively to participate in planning, training, strategizing and braining storming to develop a thorough school wellness implementation plan that adheres to the Federal
