Schools have had problems with attendance and bullying for ages. The administrators have tried to fix this with many punishments, such as corporal punishment, physical labor, and plain old detentions. However crude these punishments are none are as horrible and life destroying as school uniforms. Plenty of public schools across the country are instituting school uniforms. The topic of school uniforms has been a popular debate. Experts are on both sides of the argument, however the answer to the debate is plain. Students should not be obligated to wear school uniforms because uniforms restrict individuality, delay the transition to adulthood, and are expensive.
One popular reason students should not be required to wear school uniforms is it takes away individuality. The use of uniforms in schools has stripped the students attending those schools of their individuality and self expression. For example, In the article Arguments Against School Uniforms states “Lower-to-middle class income earners often argue against the cost of uniforms if families are responsible for covering them. If schools share in or take on the costs, taxpayer dollars typically support uniforms.” (Kokemuller) Even if parents or guardians do not have to pay for school uniforms directly they still will be technically paying for the uniforms due to taxes. The taxes will have to be raised or they will have to make budget cuts in the school. The teachers salaries would have to be lowered, supplies downgraded. People who do not have children or care about the school would still have to pay for unknown students to have a uniform they do not even want to begin with.
