On October 1, 1997, in Pearl, Mississippi, a shooting took place at pearl high school, a 16 year old boy named Luke Woodham went on a shooting rampage. Early that morning he brutally killed his mother then took her car and drove to school. He was wearing a long trench coat to hide the rifle and when he got to the school, he killed two girls, one of them being his ex-girlfriend, and injured seven other people. The reason why he did not get away was because of Joel Myrick, an assistant principal for the school, who ran to his truck, got his Colt .45, and held the boy at gunpoint until the police arrived (Pearl). Twenty students were shot and killed. Elizabeth Esty represented that district and was elected just five weeks earlier, she had not yet been sworn in. After the shooting she became the face of gun control laws, she even led a group of representatives for more gun laws. The most guns bought in a single day was on December 21, 2012; people were scared that guns would stop being sold and tried to buy them up before they went away. Etsy ended up losing her seat by two points (Zornick 23). This shows that when a terrible tragedy happens people do not want to get rid of guns but have more guns and more trained people with guns. Jefferson translated Beccaria’s attack on gun laws that states gun control laws take guns away from the people who do not commit crimes, making things even worse for the victims, and betters for the attackers (Doyle 11).
