Specific Purpose: to persuade my audience that a uniform national gun policy is necessary.
Thematic statement/ central ideas: A uniform national gun policy is necessary because the gun policies vary from state to state, the lack of a policy allows innocent death, and costs the public money.
INTRODUCTION:
ATTENTION GAINING DEVICE: Let me tell you a short story. At 11:10 AM, on Tuesday, April 20th, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold arrived in the parking lot a few minutes before lunch “A” began. They proceeded to the top of the west entrance steps, the highest point on campus each carrying a 20 lb. duffle bag. Armed with two sawed-off shotguns, a 9mm semi-automatic carbine rifle, and a 9mm Tec-9 semi-automatic pistol, in just 18 minutes they murdered 13 innocent people and injured 24 more. The story I speak of is the Columbine Tragedy.
INTRODUCTION TO TOPIC: A tragedy that would have been prevented if the US had a uniform national gun policy.
CREDIBILITY: I personally have worked in a gunsmith shop where firearms are sold. I have also studied the effect firearms have on people. I have clearly decided with the data collected for this presentation, a uniform national gun policy needs to be administered.
PREVIEW: There are three reasons. First, gun policy varies from state to state. Second, the lack of a policy allows for innocent people to die. Thirdly, it costs the public money.
TRANSITION: Now let me offer some reasons for my claim.
BODY:
1. Gun policies vary from state to state.
A. According to the Brady Foundation, one of the leading campaigns to end gun violence. 36% of the nation, 18 of 50 states, impose a waiting period.. (prevent crimes of passion, no background check, not able to check if buyer is prohibited or not to purchase.)
B. 28%, 14 of 50 states require some type of license and registration to own a firearm. (aide the police in tracking criminals and solving cases.)
C. Even fewer are the states that require safety training, 14%, that’s 7 states. (show knowledge of gun laws and proper handling and storage)
2. The lack of a uniform gun policy allows for innocent people to die.
A. Johns Hopkins University, a world renowned research center, found that nearly 3% of firearm fatalities in 2001 were unintentional, claiming the lives of 802 people and disproportionately affecting males. (over two people per day, class this size is gone in 15 days)
Writing is a form of communication that can be expressed in various ways. The short story “On Keeping a Notebook” written by Joan Didion guides the reader through her thinking process as she tries to answer why and what it means to write in her notebook. Although, it can be difficult to follow and understand her thinking it fascinates me to see her thinking process come to a full circle. I felt a personal connection with her when she writes “We are brought up in the ethic that others, any others, all others, are by definition more interesting that ourselves; taught to be diffident, just that this side of self-effacing.” Didion’s statement made me realized the experiences one has can affect one’s perspective as one writes and reads despite how

Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that any attempt by the government to control guns should not be supported
Joan Didion in her essay, “On Keeping a Notebook”, stresses that keeping a notebook is not like keeping a journal. Didion supports her claim by describing entries that are in her notebook. The author’s purpose is to enlighten the reader as to what a notebook is. The author writes in a nostalgic tone for those who are reading the essay, so that they can relate to her. She uses rhetorical appeals; such as flashback, pathos, and imagery to name a few. By using these devices she helps capture the reader’s attention.
For example, during 1995 and 1996, 10 more states adopted nondiscretionary concealed handgun laws. In the belief that concealed handguns deter crime, 31 states now grant permits automatically to citizens who have no significant criminal records or histories of major mental illness. In all 31 states, more people now carry legally concealed handguns.
Eighty-nine people die from gun violence in the United States every day according to the Brady Campaign , from school children to victims of domestic violence to people going about their daily lives. As we mourn the lives of those killed in incidents of gun violence across the country, we need to take action. We should all do everything in our power to keep tragedies like this from happening again. When it comes to addressing mass shootings, we need new answers
Imagine being forced to crawl and hide with gunshots near your ears. Imagine seeing people shot to death in front of you. Believe it or not, scenes like these occur on a daily basis in America. In the first 320 days of this year there were 325 mass shootings in the nation, defined as where there were more than four victims at each shooting. (Mass Shooting Tracker). This egregious level of violence is unacceptable in a developed country and major reform in gun legislation to improve the tragic state of public safety in the United States today. Although critics of expanded gun legislation incorrectly argue that easier access to guns increases safety and that gun laws are unconstitutional, it is imperative that America adopts stronger gun control legislation because heightened regulations reduce crime rates and have successfully improved public safety in other developed countries. The first reason handguns should be outlawed for ordinary citizens is because their main purpose is simply to kill other human beings. Why would our country allow us to have the right to own an object that is deadly? Our government seems to want to protect us. For example, seatbelt laws and motorcycle helmet laws were created to protect our lives. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforces pollution laws to keep us safe and healthy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspects food and tests drugs to make sure American citizens are not harmed by nasty food and dangerous drugs. Yet, our government allows just about anybody to own and walk around with guns. It does not appear our government really cares about our safety. If it did, handguns would be outlawed for the general public, because their only purpose is to kill people.

I found Kolb's (1984) model of experiential learning a useful way to summarize the process if individual learning. The cycle begins when we each experience the world through our senses. Kolb calls this step ‘concreate experience', to indicate that he does not mean the various experiences we have through books or plays, but real-world experiences. Examples of concrete experience could be as varied as sitting through a boring meeting or suffering the distress of losing a job. Kolb suggest that to learn from our experiences we must engage in a second step of consistency reflecting on what has occurred. This step he calls ‘reflective observation'. We are able to reflect on much less than what occurred in the actual experience. Reflection is selective and influenced by our expectations. The third step in the learning cycle is making sense of what we have experience. In other words, ‘abstract conceptualization'. The final step in Kolb's model is ‘active experimentation'. At this step, we test out the meaning that we have constructed by taking action in the world – which then leads to new experiences. Kolb has shown that over time we tend to get more proficient at some steps of the process that at others, thus we develop a learning style preference. Kolb has noted all the steps are necessary, the smallest alteration to any of these steps can make the learning process less
I, for one, am currently going through one. Buying a notebook is easy, but making the effort to write in one everyday is not. Didion also expressed that she had has struggled writing in her notebook. She states “At no point have I ever been able successfully to keep a diary; my approach to daily life ranges from the grossly negligent to the merely absent, and on these few occasions when I have tried dutifully to record a day’s events, boredom has so overcome me that the results are mysterious at best”(76). I see that I am not the only one that has reached this problem numerous times. My first time owning a notebook was when I was in middle school. I wrote it in at least once a day. I tried very hard to, but then I lost the notebook for a while. I eventually found the notebook and threw it out because I did not like what I had written. I wanted to not remember the middle school me and forget about her and my mindset because life was troublesome for me at that time. Moving along to the end of senior year in high school and I decide to buy a new notebook. I was excited about it, writing in it, detailing my life. After the first two weeks, the thirteen year old me visited me and I lost all types of interest to write in my notebook. I went from writing in it everyday to writing it in once every three weeks.
