The scarlet Ibis, a mix of emotion, changes the definition of love. Hugs and kisses seem to dominate the meaning of love. No one ever truly digging past the surface of what love represents. Blooming from an invisible, almost nonexistent feeling, into a heart wrenching emotion.
Upon meeting someone for the first time, most seem to be skeptical of them. Not quite sure how their feelings might develop into. Brother experiences this upon hearing about Doodles illness, not quite sure how to react to him. The hardship that comes with having a sibling that may not “be all there” (430), lay heaving on Brother. Hatred began to form within Brother’s heart, enough hate for plans of murder to begin. Everything came to a sudden halt with such an innocent gesture; a smile. “However, one afternoon as I watched him, my head poked between the iron posts of the foot of the bed, he looked straight at me and grinned. Brother presented the opportunity to show Doodle a place Brother held dear, a place he loved. “Finally, I could see I was licked. Doodle was my brother and he was going to cling to me forever, no matter what I did, so I dragged him across the burning cotton field to share with him the only beauty I knew, Old Woman Swamp.” Although, he seems reluctant at first that Doodle will stay in his life until the end, he accepts it. To love someone no words need spoken, the greatest ways seep through actions of others. The places that hold special meaning and memories seem less likely to be shared with other. Most only share with the ones they love and truly care about. The moment Brother shared the significant place, Old Woman Swamp, a silent ‘I love you’ leaked through his actions towards Doodle. This quote shows that Doodle’s brother grows fonder of Doodle and the two become inseparable. They go everywhere together and Doodle’s brother takes care of Doodle when they go on their journey.
