In the film “The Great Debaters”, all of the main characters exhibited qualities of heroism. One character that stood out, in particular, was Samantha Booke. Ms. Booke was the first female member of the Wiley College debate team, and one of the few women in the 1930’s that received an education. Throughout the film, Samantha was forced to overcome loneliness, gender and racial inequality, and saddest of all, heartbreak. Being the true hero she is, she conquered her hardships with flying colors.

Since early civilization, gender inequality has been prevalent, in the workforce and at home. Woman are expected to be the homemaker, not the worker. In a time, when men had a hard time finding employment, Samantha was one of the few women to seek an education, intending to better herself. She was not only looked down upon for receiving an education, but for her race and gender. Booke did not allow others judgments to discourage her aspirations or stray her from future achievements. Regardless of external opinions, Samantha argued her beliefs effectively and passionately, proving that gender and race do not determine ability. …show more content…

In this instance, Samantha Booke was so blinded by love, she did not see the potential wrongdoing, Henry Lowe could commit. Often after a fault in a relationship, heartache and mistrust are common feelings to develop, especially amongst woman. After Lowe was unfaithful to Samantha, she was in a distraught state. In her time of devastation, Samantha Booke exemplified selfless behavior, a quality of heroism, by putting her personal needs aside. She channeled her audacity into productivity, that would benefit her team's argument in the debate. Rather than dwelling on her misfortunes, she made her teammates and wrongly unjust citizens her
