Sam Steinberg always followed ethical business approach and put emphasis on customer satisfaction. During Second World War, when all the business ventures increased the price of the goods produced using the opportunity of excess demand, Steinberg understood the situation of the buyers, their inability to purchase the goods at higher prices. In war times, there was lack of resources, jobs in the country. The economic situation was declining, which forced Steinberg to sell the products in low prices to all the customers. Hirschi’s Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people anticipating the consequences of their behavior”(Macionis 248). It was shown in the movie that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is a big reason as to why he acts so deviant in the future. On of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment is family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as one of Benny’s friends “crazy cousin”. It was clear that he did not enjoy having Sam around. This can reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he wasn’t even living with his parents. This would lead Sam to acting deviant without worrying about what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was kicked out of school based on his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once that relationship broke off. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. Sam Walton, who first purchased a branch of the Ben Franklin Stores from the Butler Brothers, founded Wal-Mart. When he took over this franchise, his marketing strategy was the same and remains the same: selling products at low prices. By selling products at low prices, he is able to get higher-volume sales at a lower-profit margin. To make the lowest prices possible, he found suppliers that charged a lower price than the other stores nearby. This continues to be a primary strategy that induced Wal-Mart to currently being the largest retailer in the world. In effort to maintain their status as one of world’s most valuable companies, Wal-Mart has been exploiting employees and impoverished nations, ruining competition, and placing pressure on the U.S. government.
Wal-Mart as we know it today evolved from Sam Walton’s goals for great value and great customer service. Mr. Walton’s competitors thought his idea that a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service would never work. Mr. Walton also credited the rapid growth of Wal-Mart not just to the low costs that attracted his customers, but also to his associates. He relied on them to give customers the great shopping experience that would keep them coming back. Sam shared his vision for the company with associates in a way that was nearly unheard of in the industry. He made them partners in the success of the company, and firmly believed that this partnership was what made Walmart great.
Walmart was started by Sam Walton in 1962, after experiencing franchising in Newport. He realized that he could pass to his consumers the discounts that he earned by purchasing in wholesale and subsequently managing to acquire profits through the sale by volume. Sam Walton was obsessed with cost cutting and he managed to foster this culture in the business that he started (Frank, n. d). He managed to keep the overheads of the company by controlling his payroll. He did this by framing his frugal nature as a crusade for the low consumers as well as a quest for a favorable lifestyle for Americans. For this assignment, I used Walmart as an example for an organization that is a major player in the U.S. economy. They have been in operation since 1962, and their services are many, including retail, groceries, electronics, and home improvement. Walmart is considered the largest among all retailers, so it truly belongs to the retail industry. They do, however, face many challenges from industry competitors, such as Target, Big Lots, and Costco. Mr. Sam Walton (Walmart’s founder), however, has earned incredible success for Walmart in the retail market with an ever-expanding customer base. He started his business back in 1945 from a branch of Ben Franklin Stores, with a focus on selling products at lower prices to get higher-volume sales at lower-profit margins.
First, let’s take a look back at how the company got started. Sam Walton opened up the very first Walmart on July 2, 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. By 1967 the Walton family owned 24 stores ringing up $12.7 million in sales. In 1983 the first Sam’s Club was opened in Oklahoma. If you fast-forward to 1990 then Walmart becomes the world’s number one retailer. Sadly in 1992 Sam Walton passed away at the age of 74, but his legacy lives on as one of the greatest entrepreneurs to ever live.
Ethics is the study of right or wrong and the morality of the choices that individuals make. That basicly means the set of morals or responsibility that a person, group, or field have. Ethics can also be classified as code of morals. In business there are ethics that portray to business. These are called business ethics, business ethics just happen to be the application of ethics, morals, into the business field.
