The Salem Witch Trials took place in Salem, a part of the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1692. This was a dark and trying time for United States history. During this time, colonist were greatly afraid of the devil, and his the people he sent to do his work. Salem was known for being a community that was extremely devoted to their Christian beliefs. They feared that the Devil was trying to find ways to destroy them and their community. The first case, was when the minister’s daughter Betty Parris and her cousin Abigail Williams started listening to stories being told by their slave from Barbados, Tituba. For starters, King Charles II had revoked Massachusetts Bay Colony’s royal charter. They needed this to be document to colonize the area. He had revoked this charter due to the fact they were not following rules. Then the new King and Queen of England issued a new anti-religious charter. The puritans had left England to escape religious persecution, and they were fearful that their religion was once again under attack. They were also afraid they were going to lose control over their colony. Historians believe that this contributed to their crisis they were having in the colony, and why they took the Salem Witch Trials as far as they did. During this time, the colony also had a small pox epidemic, they were afraid of being under attack from Native American tribes. The colonist at the time blamed the devil for all of their hardships. Linnda Caporael, was a psychologist that was published in Science, in 1976. She felt that all the abnormal side effects were being caused by ergot. Ergot can be found in rye, wheat, and other cereal grasses. Toxicologist say that when you eat food that is contaminated with ergo, you may have muscle spasms, vomiting, delusions, and even hallucinations. This fungus thrives in warm damp climates.
