Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, is famously known for its violent and gruesome nature. Murder and sabotage is thrown in throughout the entirety of the play, startling the audience with Shakespeare’s heavy use of gore. However, these bloody murders are not just written for the sake of entertainment; they show the repercussion of Macbeth’s insatiable ambition for power. Macbeth articulates impending destruction that arises from unrestricted ambition through Shakespeare’s use of plot events; this warns the audience that this can happen to anyone.

A talented figure skater, Tonya Harding, carried the honor as an Olympian representing America and took home numerous first place victories for domestic ice skating competitions. However, these achievements were not enough since the ultimate goal was a gold medal in the upcoming winter Olympic games. She, however, was unsure in her ability to win among so many other talented ice skaters, so she sought to seize her dream through unethical means of deception. She had come this far already and did not see failure as an option, much like Macbeth: “For mine own good / All causes shall give way. I am in blood / Stepped in so far that, should I wade no more,/ Returning were as tedious as go o'er” (Mac. 3.4.167-170). She saw an obstacle to her dream in the form of Nancy Kerrigan, another talented figure skater representing America and rival to Harding. Like Macbeth, she saw an opportunity to remove the king and take the throne for herself. Consumed by ambition, Harding hired a man to break Kerrigan’s leg to prevent her from competing in the Olympics. However, the plan failed because the assailant managed to only bruise her leg. Kerrigan went on to win the silver medal while Harding managed a respectable eighth place finish. Shortly after, the scandal broke loose which led to Harding’s career and life to implode . She was banned from the Olympics and sentenced to prison. A talented athlete with a bright future shared the same fatal flaw as Macbeth and eventually lost
