Within The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a strong theme was developed throughout the plot. The author illustrated the story on the idea that a title does not always refer to one’s actions. As an example, Cherry was portrayed as a pretty, well-dressed Social. Ponyboy described her and Marcia as “tuff-looking girls -- dressed sharp and really good looking” (p. 21) to paint a picture of how she looked. According to the way she dressed, Cherry was part of the upper class Socs. However, her image was not a portrayal of her attitude and intentions. Contrary to her title, she chose to help the Greasers and did not neglect them. Additionally, Ponyboy started to realize this as well.
