How does Russian influence effect American defense positioning and why does the United States need to continue to maintain an open relationship with the Putin regime? Russia, as well as both the former czarist regime and later Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.), holds a tremendous amount of global influence. This is especially evident with regards to defense positioning of multiple countries in both the European, American and Asian regions of the world. The sheer size of Russia, to many considered part of both the European and Asian continents, is a primary factor as to how Russian influence has been able to bleed into many bordering countries, including even the reclusive North Korea.
It is because of this influence, as well as having one of the top militaries in the world, that has caused global uneasiness. Although the Russian Federation has kept close ties with the UN Security Council and has remained peaceful with NATO, there have been multiple disagree-ments between Russia and other allied countries. This includes the Crimea Annexation and restoration into Russian borders by President Putin, as well as the more recent events in Syria against Israeli missile attacks.
