On April 12, 2014 at 7:30 pm, I gratefully attended the musical Guys and Dolls at Ouachita Baptist University's auditorium. Directed by Daniel Inouye, this wonderful play is based on the story and characters of Damon Runyan. These stories which were written in the 1920s and 1930s, involved gangsters, gamblers, and other characters from the New York underworld. The premiere of Guys and Dolls on Broadway was in 1950 where it ran 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Wade and Ferree also state “sports are squarely on the masculine side of the gender binary” (Wade and Ferree, 174). Hence, we are brought up with the understanding that playing and talking about sports is a boy’s thing, which further promotes the notion that sports are a very masculine thing. Furthermore, as playing sports is competitive and is a way to show excellence, young boys are considered as “real boys” and “real men” later on. From this research of examining how gender socialization is projection through toys to children, have led to conclusion that in order to prevent children from living by these stereotypes portrayed through toys, parents should encourage gender-neutral and cross-gender play in children at an early age. Just for the mere that their brain is so receptive to knowledge into creating to become the person they are to be in life. Give children a chance to not only have fun while playing with their toys and that there aren’t any pressures on them that this what they should be and that there a mind full options that they can choose from.
Children are more likely to engage in more positive behaviors and do better on intellectual tests when they’re parents actively play with them. Tough states that, “The children who parents were counseled to play more with them did better … on tests of I.Q., aggressive behavior, and self-control.” Basically, this quote is making the point that in the experiment discussed in the article, the parents who were trained to play more with their children – not simply give them milk like the other group in the experiment – did much better when it comes to social behavior, like controlling themselves, reduce aggression, and intellectual benefits. I feel that this is true because when parents play with their children, they build a bond with the child and their child’s brain is learning a lot more with the parent.
Though both genders seem to spend the same amount playing, boys and girls differ in several aspects of play. When children use their imagination they could be anything they want and they could travel through time and space. There are different ways children’s can use to develop and express their imagination. For example, drawing, reading stories and role playing by pretending to be someone or something else, these ways allow children to express their imagination through thinking, creating and involving emotions. Imagination gives the children the opportunity to explore the world around them. The living room was dark and the only thing you could see was the brightness of the TV. Also, I could still hear many people talking from down stairs, fire truck siren going off, and the city lights that were still shining bright. At the age of seven, on a cold Friday night in Brooklyn; my mom, cousin, and I started watching some scary movies since it was around Halloween. There was this movie called “Child’s Play” and as a child, I didn’t like the movie at all due to the fact that there was an ugly doll that was moving and killing people. During, that weekend it was showing marathons all weekend long since it was the Halloween weekend. The bed was pulled out with all the warm blankets and snacks besides us waiting for the move to start.

Hello, Oliva. Those articles you showed in your post where greet examples of why children need to participate in rough and tumble play at a young age. It helps them develop appropriately and also build them up to be strong and to communicate with the other kids effectively overall. From the findings that you presented in the articles, I really wasn’t that surprised that boys showed a little more aggressive in the rough and tumble play than the girls do. I think it all comes down to what our society dictates overall as what is the appropriate actions for boys and girls. I a lot of times. Boys tend to be more aggressive and to more rough and tumble things like tackling and pushing a lot more than girls do.
Boys touched each other in a more subtle nature than girls did. Boys would pick things off of the person they were interacting with, poke the other for attention, etc. Most of their intention was grooming or being humorous by lightly pushing or hitting the other.
“Did you notice that the boys game is played differently than the girls, I mean my children don’t complain about the rule difference but I wonder what is up with that.” Most likely this is what is going through parents minds while their kids are playing a game and then there are other teams that are a different gender playing the game differently. In youth sports, the rules are different for the different genders playing the game which makes it a really judged game based off of athletes different genders.
In this era, males and females both uphold household duties. Children watch and learn from their environment. A boy watching his father care for an infant is going to want to imitate his father. Playing with a doll is simply following what he has seen his father do. Taking away the doll is taking away that child’s future as a nurturing father (Gioia, 2010).
