Roseanne Barr and The Portrayal of Trump Supporters in Modern Media
In 1988 Roseanne Barr and then husband Tom Arnold created a show displaying the day to day life of the Conners; a working class family based out of illinois. In this show they discussed the trials and tribulations of the average working class american family. In 2018, a reboot of the once beloved comedy show came back on the scene but this time with a notable theme: Donald Trump. Roseanne Barr has been an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump’s presidency for quite some time now and I do not believe it’s all that big of a shock that she would make her leading woman a Trump supporter. But I bring two questions to the table: should we discuss the topic of politics in family television shows and should

Personally I believe we should. Many families such as mine have very different political views based on the person you talk to and I believe that this is a common occurrence for many other american families. I think that having a family that have different opinions, whether those opinions are common or not should be discussed. I acknowledge the fact that people may see it as promotion of one cause or set of ideals over another, yet I think if you simply make things unbiased in the overall writing this can be solved. I too understand that both sides of the political coin may be uncomfortable with these portrayals as both far right and far left parties dislike having one or the other infiltrate their echo chamber but that does not matter. Teenagers who are up to date on the current political climate and adults who have been dealing with politics and opinions for quite some time could both benefit from a show that talks about households that have different opinions as it would bring a light hearted but powerful outlook on what life is like for this all too common
In an interview in 1974, Producer and show creator Norman Lear said of his television sitcom, All in the Family: “People laugh harder at the things they care the most about.” ("Day at Night: Norman Lear, renowned TV producer ("All in the Family")." ) If that is true then the viewers most certainly must have cared about the topics being addressed on the show because All in the Family topped the Neilsen ratings, ranking number-one, from 1971 to 1976. As with any successful producer, Lear’s and co-producer Bud Yorkin’s primary goal was to get ratings. The fact that All in The Family arguably became one of the most influential television sitcoms ever aired was just a bonus. The show became a soap box for its creators, producers and writers to broadcast their political views as well as provide them with a vehicle to combat what they saw as social injustice. By featuring relevant themes of social significance such as death, divorce, racism, rape, and homosexuality, each week, the program put the spot light on topics previously discussed in hushed tones behind closed doors. While high ratings may have been the first priority, the producers definitely had an additional agenda to try to bring about social change by stimulating dialog and debate within families, neighborhoods, local hangouts, anywhere Americans would congregate.

From the beginning of the episode, the mother (Roseanne) goes to work. This is an unusual gender role because the father has traditionally been the one in the family to work consistent hours for his job. Next, the father in Roseanne admits to not doing much of anything throughout the day, while the mother was at work. Finally, Roseanne speaks to her friends and co-workers in a way that is very pro-feminist. She even said, “Good men don’t just happen, they have to be created by us women.” Roseanne is a great example of non-traditional gender roles in the way the mother and the father are shown through the

"Seinfeld" was always present in my home during its nine-year run on Thursday nights as "Must See TV," and the social commentary was welcome humor. However, not everyone was thrilled by Seinfeld's prominence in American society and the subject matter with which Seinfeld dealt. Many Christians, Jews and other minorities had problems with the show's portrayal of their respective groups. Despite criticism from ethnic and religious groups, Jerry Seinfeld and his show were possibly the best sources of social commentary that America's mainstream had to offer. The show is missed in today's current television line-up and no post-"Seinfeld" sitcom has come to the same level of cultural criticism.

The average family: a married man and women, 2.5 children, with a beautiful home that has a white picket fence and a dog. However, this “average” family image has changed drastically over the past decade particularly with the acceptance of gay marriage and green cards that are easier to obtain; this has had a substantial influence not only on our society but leverage on social media. An example of this changed media dynamic is displayed through the comedic mockumentary, Modern Family. Within this fictional, interview style comedy series, three families that are extremely stereotypical, live their interrelated lives. The series follows these three families, an “average” American family featuring a married man, Phil, and women, Claire, who have three children, a gay couple, Mitchell and Cameron, who adopted a child and an older man, Jay, that is Claire and Mitchell’s father, married to a hot young Columbian women who also have a son. Modern Family, which is given a reality-style, has cameras following around each stereotypical family, portraying a very dynamic interrelation.
During the air time of The Brady Bunch, 1969 until it was cancelled in 1972, major historical events occurred such as the Vietnam War, the Watergate Scandal, and the terrorists attack at the Olympic games in Munich. It is made clear that The Brady Bunch tended to dodge most social and cultural issues that took place during the run time of the series. Issues concerning gender equality and women's rights were very rarely discussed exclusively between brother and sister arguments. In contrast, Modern Family includes current social, cultural, and political issues in their episodes. In fact, as of June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, not too long after an episode of Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker, two homosexual men, airs on television showing their wedding ceremony. Later the two men adopt a child together. Another key point in Modern Family is the multicultural marriage between Gloria and husband Jay Pritchett. Jay is a sixty-five year old white male, married to a Colombian woman who is significantly younger in age. Marriages featuring homosexuals, multicultural couples, or a significant age gap would have been considered unacceptable fifty years
Though not immune to criticism, Modern Family and Full House still claim glimpses of societal pressure when showing aspects of the “American family.”
Some might disagree with Klosterman’s view on Perez Hilton and his villainy, but that is because they do not realize the amount of hatred and sorrow Perez Hilton has brought upon the world. Perez Hilton might seem like a bully to some but if we take a step back and look at the big picture we will see that he is in fact the definition of evil. Because he makes spreading lies and harassing people on the internet seem like such a wonderful job to have, people who are reading his blogs and looking up to him as an idol take bullying and harassing people as normal thing. Nowadays internet bullying is such an overwhelming problem for our society and we struggled to find the source of problem because the internet moves so quickly. “The reason Perez
Rosie the riveter was the face of recruiting women into the Armed Forces during WWII. The increasing demand for soldiers was not being filled fast enough by just males. As a result, between the years 1940 and 1945, the percentage of female service members increased from 27% to 37%. Even on the civilian side of things, the ratio of married working women outside of their homes increased to one out of every four. The population of women that did not join the war was prompted by Rosie the Riveter’s iconic image to work in one of the many munitions industries throughout the US. In 1943, not only had the female population contributed exponential numbers in support of the war; but women had begun to dominate. Reports indicate that more than 310,000 women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry; this made up more than half of the total workforce. Prior to this moment in history, women’s involvement in the aircraft industry was merely one percent.
