For many years there has thought to have been a cozy relationship between the Yakuza and the National Police Agency of Japan and had an amicable relationship with law enforcement. All organized crime alike, corruption and bribery is found in high volume amongst this relationship. The Yakuza crime elements are no stranger to Japanese parliamentarians, and have been previously associated to a former Prime Mister, Junichiro Koizumi- himself, being the grandson of a Yakuza member. They used to allow law enforcement to visit locations to get up to date information on their group. The Triad name is an honor to the detention centers in which original members were thought to have been re-educated (Hays, 2013). Roots of the Triads trace back to the secret societies of China, dating back to around 1000 B.C., when the peasants of Chinese society often fell victim to higher leaders, causing them to form tight nit groups to provide any sort of protection from their weakness. Only known through Chinese legend, this is to be the belief of how the first Triads were founded by Chinese monks; who were committed to fighting injustices. As the years passed, these formed Triad groups had gained enough political power they were able bring down emperors. With this power came control, and the Triads of the 18th century Hung Society established the opium market in China, using channels of foreign traders as trafficking routes. By the 19th century, the Triad secret societies were enacted and operations continued in the secret realm; which opposed the harsh rule of the Manchu Qing dynasty (Hays, 2013). The Triad organized crime continued to thrive during the warlord era of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Just as all other organized criminal networks, Asian organized crime networks have gained international power due to the globalization of economics and the advancement of communication technology (FBI, 2016). As the United States became generous with immigration policies, the gateway was provided for members of these organized crime enterprises to freely enter and remain present within the United States- virtually undetected as well. Asian organized crime is reported to have a strong presence in more than 50 metropolitan areas of the United States, with the majority of members placing a strong hold in big cities like Boston, Chicago, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Unlike the traditional Asian criminal enterprises of their homeland, American based Asian criminal groups conduct the crimes of racketeering, loansharking, extortion, illegal gambling, and prostitution; as well as violent crimes of murder and kidnapping.
