In this scene, Romeo and Juliet see each other for the last time. Romeo tells Juliet that this will probably be the last time they see each other. Lady Capulet then tells Juliet that she will have to be married to Paris on thursday. Juliet tells her mother that she would rather marry Romeo than Paris. Lord Capulet then comes into this scene and tells Juliet that she is unthankful and a terrible daughter. Lady Capulet then tells her husband that he should calm down. Then the nurse tells Juliet that she should have just get married to Paris. Lastly, Juliet says that she is going to Friar Lawrence to get the potion, so it looks like she died. This is the last time Romeo and Juliet see each other before they die, and the scene drags out their departure. Even Romeo thinks that they will never meet again, adding to the dramatic side of this scene. Another purpose of this scene is to further characterize Juliet’s and Lord Capulet’s character. In the beginning of the play, Juliet is expressed as a sweet and innocent little girl who obeys her parents always. But then, in this scene, Juliet does not obey her father’s orders to marry Paris and says she won’t marry him. This characterizes Juliet as a moody teenager because she was acting one way in the beginning of the play and then in this scene she contradicts the previous characterization of her by disobeying her father. The further characterization of Lord Capulet was also seen in this scene. Lord Capulet is seen as a kind and caring father who has Juliet’s best interest at heart up until this scene. In this scene, as soon as Juliet says she won’t marry Paris, Capulet snaps and becomes an angry and mean father. Another key purpose of this scene was for foreshadowing the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
