Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers who have to risk their lives in order to accomplish their love, regardless the feud between their families. By the end, the death of Romeo and Juliet finally bring the reconciliation to these two families. It is fate that lead these two most shall-not meet people fall in love and it is love that eventually wins against hatred. There have been many different versions of Romeo and Juliet, whether it was for film, stage or musicals. These different recontextualised adaptations changed the original play by many ways, some modernised the language, environment, props; while others changed the original characteristics of some characters. In the end of the movie, Juliet wakes up before Romeo drinks the poison but doesn’t have time to stop Romeo. The inevitable fate plays an important role on these two lovers, which leaves the audience with a sense of pity for the two. In this scene, Romeo said “The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss…” From the quote, fate was highlighted as Romeo said that he would seal the doors of breath, meaning that he would kill himself; yet, after he has said this, Juliet’s hand moves, the audience know that Juliet is awake and hope that Romeo would have seen it and to drink the poison, but Romeo does not see her. This version of Romeo and Juliet shows the audience the old feud between white people and black people, whereas the Luhrmann edition of Romeo and Juliet shows the audience a feud between both families similar in status. Due to the fact that the era when the play was set, the most common and biggest fight was the feud between white people and black people. Also in this version, some things were emphasised, such as the theme love triumphs over hate, and the idea that love can break down the barriers between the two races. In the first act, scene one, Tybalt says “I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee cowards” From this quote, we can tell that there are a lot of hate between the Montagues and Capulets for a very long time. This quote is part of the exposition of the play, because this sets up the conflict between two families. However, in the last scene, when Romeo and Juliet all die, the Capulet family and the Montague family all come together. This is shown in Act 5, when Capulet says “O brother Montague, give me thy hand.” In the quote, the idea love rules over hate is emphasised, Capulet addresses Montague brother, which means that the two families have stopped the fight and they are trying to restore friendly relationships between each other.
