The texts for this assignment vary according to a few factors. When it was written (Old Testament versus New Testament), and by whom was the text written form the structure and content of the text. Letters by Paul (Galatians and Romans) are consistent with gender equality when it relates to faith, working in the ministry and the promises of God. Variations occur in Genesis, Colossians, 1 Timothy and Titus. Galatians 3:28 is a text out of the ordinary. It tells us that we are all children of God through faith and there is no distinction given between the sexes. Male or female does not matter as heirs to the promises of Abraham. Romans 16 is where Paul names specific women, Phoebe being chief among them, to be received with the same respect as their male contemporaries, and to assist her with any requests she may have. Phoebe is referred to as a deacon (or servant) in the church in Cenchreae and a benefactor of many, including Paul. Both Galatians and Romans are undisputed letters of Paul and are therefore in contrast to the books that follow below, which are some of the disputed letters of Paul. This explains the discrepancy or pseudepigraphy in Paul’s teaching concerning the role of women in ministry.

Wives are to submit to their husbands in ways that honor God, husbands are to love their wives and not take advantage of them. The role the husband and wife relationship plays directly mirrors the relationship of Christ and the church. Both parties are to be courteous to one another the same way Christ is with the church. The same way the church submits to Christ is the same way wives are to submit to their husbands as the leadership in the home. Husbands are to love their wives the same way they love
