The Aeneid The Aeneid, by Virgil, is an epic poem about dedication, love, pain, and kindness. Aeneas is Trojan that is loyal and dedicated to his country. His heroic action is shown when he carried his father on his back and his son by the hand. I chose to write about this poem because it shows how one character can change dramatically. Aeneid is a great Roman leader that is cares for the safety of his people. He turned down the love of his life to go fulfill his destiny. He was destined to be in Italy. This poem is structured the same way as modern literature. Virgil’s use of the three female characters in the story: Venus, Dido, and Juno depicts power and the decisions women encounter that can change the way they are seen by society. In
In Adler’s article, Aeneas is the one character that suffers the most throughout this epical poem. It all goes back to the evil Juno. She is the one who planned all the events that happened to try to destroy Aeneas. Juno is the queen of the god so therefore she is the most powerful one. Her cruelty is unique because it cannot be created, it can only be destroyed. This shows that Juno’s power is really strong and that mean that as a woman a god she can destroy anything. Her main goal is to stop Aeneas and make him suffer. Her evilness makes her a strong character. Juno look forward to her future, “the loss that motivates Juno belongs not just to the past but the future,” and the thing that she may face (Alder 10). She has not feeling for others and shows no pity for people. If a woman in today’s society would do anything to bring someone down, they are viewed as powerful and evil according to society. Juno never became a woman of people and that is what happens to people who try to hurt others. The decision she took throughout the poem made her the powerful character she is. She showed no pity for nobody. In both worlds, women are capable of making decision that can change a community, a population, or even the
The women characters that portrayed as goddesses were capable of doing what modern women can do. They were able to “oversee women's fertility, successful childbirth, and especially motherhood-ever the principal purposes of a woman's life,” (Vivante). They were no different from the modern day women. The article includes other gods that had different potentials according to their role in the play or poem they were used. For example, Venus in The Aeneid is portrayed as powerful but her power is negative. She uses it to destroy. I am going to use this article in my essay to compare what other god in other literature are as powerful as the ones in The Aeneid. I will also include that Venus was the god of sex but by her actions she turned into a god of love. Women are strong, powerful, caring, kind, selfish, emotional, and weak. They are capable of doing anything they set their mind too, even if it means going against a man. Whatever they may decide to do, they are always judge by society. Women in history has proven that women deserve rights and play an important role in the modern
