The sportsperson as a role model Good morning ladies and gentlemen Joe Humphreys, in his book, foul play: What's wrong with sports, challenges the idea that sport is a positive influence and believes that sport has an uncanny ability to make us lose perspective, brings out the worst in people and encourages unethical, discriminatory behaviour as well as cheating. However seen in the first slide, I would like to pose a question, is it sport that has this effect or the calibre of athletes participating in the sport? Professional sportsman are seen as role models, they are extremely talented, physically in good shape, are highly paid and are the face of many different products, as seen in slide two. These sportsman are idolized by fans all around the world. In fact, Sports Illustrated for Kids did a survey with children between the ages of 7 and 12 about who their role model was, the majority answered that a professional athlete was who they most looked up to and because of today's media, athletes are constantly in the public eye with everything they do on and off of the playin...
