A rough sketch of Roanoke Island

Sir Walter Raleigh was an english explorer, writer, and poet of the 16th century. In 1584, Queen Elizabeth allowed Raleigh to colonize any unknown land in the New World. He set out and eventually colonised Roanoke Island. Unfortunately, Raleigh was sent back for supplies for 3 years. When he got back, he found the colony in ruins and the word “Croatoan” carved onto one of the tree trunks.

The colony is self governed. Some jobs for settlers in Maryland are farming, shipping, fishing, mining for iron, and logging.

The Boston Tea Party was an act from the colonists after the Parliament passed the Tea Act without the colonists approval. This meant that the colonists could only get tea from England. The colonists became upset and decided to protest. A group of colonists dressed up as Indians and raided a shipment of tea, dumping the tea into the ocean.

On June 16, 1775, the colonists learned that the British were planning to send troops to occupy the nearby hills. To try to counter this, the colonists built defenses around Bunker Hill. The next day, the British marched up the hill. Due to low ammunition, Patriot General Prescott ordered his troops to “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” The Patriots lost that battle, but managed to inflict heavy damage to the British forces, with their casualties numbering at 1,000, and the Patriot’s casualties only at 400.
