Rex Harrison was an English actor of stage and played in films. Harrison started his career on stage in 1924. His first Tony award was won with his performance as Henry the 8th in Anne of the Thousand Days in 1949. He won another Tony award nearly eight years later with is role of Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. He then brought his role of Henry Higgins to the big screen in 1964 with the film version of My Fair Lady. This film earned him both a Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for Best Actor. Harrison was born at Derry House in Huyton, Lancashire, the son of Edith Mary and William Reginald Harrison, a cotton broker. He was educated at Liverpool College. After a bout of childhood measles, Harrison lost most of the sight in his left eye, which on one occasion caused some on-stage difficulty. He first appeared on the stage in 1924 in Liverpool. Harrison's acting career was interrupted during World War 2 while serving in the Royal Air Force, reaching the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He acted in various stage productions until 11 May 1990. He acted in the West End of London when he was young, appearing in the Terence Rattigan play French Without Tears, which proved to be his breakthrough role. He also starred in the film Doctor Dolittle in 1967. After all of this new upcoming success, he became very demanding towards things and people. He started demanding auditions, composers, musical playwrights, and more money. People tend to think that Rex harrison was a jerk after his success. He was back starring in a film in 1967 in the comedy, The Honey Pot. His two co-stars, Maggie Smith and Cliff Robertson, became his best friends for the rest of his life. Both Maggie Smith and Cliff Robertson both spoke at Rex Harrison’s memorial at his funeral in 1990. Wow! That is truly the definition of lifelong best
