Mohau Manamela English essay fourth genre 12.1 “the evolution of Baz Lurhmann as a director” Baz Lurhmann is an Australian film director, screenwriter and producer and is one of the most prominent and successful directors of our time. The born director was raised by both this mother, ballroom dance teacher and his father a farmer, who also ran a local cinema. And after a childhood training in ballroom dance, the young man unsurprisingly graduated enrolled and graduated at the prestigious national institute of dramatic arts in Sydney. During this he became a prominent figure in Australian theatre, directing a number of plays, short films and even a number of operas, some of which including the original strictly ballroom, a thirty-minute play, and 1990 remake of puccini la bohame for the Australian opera. Baz uses the voice over as both a way to enhance the situation, indicating how the situation is both important within the building of the character and the storyline. Baz also uses this technique to show the inner thoughts and feelings of the character or more specifically the narrator, this way the audience becomes part of the what is going on as they begin to understand the narrator as a person, and gain a first-person perspective on the situation. This technique was best shown in the depiction of “Christian” in Moulin rouge and “Nick Carraway” in the great Gatsby. Baz also makes use of music and colour as a way to convey feelings, as characters in Moulin rouge often express their thoughts by breaking into song and the use of symbolic colour in his compositions, such as the green light in the great Gatsby, symbolising Gatsby’s hope of being with daisy. These techniques all help with engaging the audience and intensify the movie
