I have chosen two articles that discuss the reading habit, but in a different context, one of academic articles and the other is a popular article. The title for academic article is “Understands the reading habits of children in Singapore”. This article is written by Shaheen Majid and Venus Tan from Nanyang Technological University. It published in Journal of Education Media and Library Sciences in 2007. The title for popular article is “Pleasurable pursuit”. This article is written by John Doraisamy and it’s taken from The Star Online. It published in 2010 as education article. Both of these articles are discussing about reading habits and reading interest among children. Using these articles I can study what the different between academic and popular articles although in same topic. In this evaluation, certain criteria had been used such as the authority of the authors, purpose of the article, the methodology been used, the data collection and analysis, the findings of the article, references that been used and the target readers. These criteria will be answered the different between these articles. First of all, we look at the first criteria is the authority of the authors of the articles. The authors for academic articles are Shaheen Majid and Venus Tan from Nanyang Technological University. In this article, it mentions that Shaheen Majid is Associate Professor and Venus Tan is graduate student. This was published in Journal of Education Media and Library Sciences. It means that both authors are having authority to write this article. This is because in my opinion scholar journals do not choose or publish any articles or research paper from those who do not have the authority. They suppose to check every single word and e... ... middle of paper ... ... to enable readers to find other sources of available authors to produce the journal. In addition it provides authenticity and accuracy in providing information to the reader. Readers not only of ordinary readers but also researchers, lecturers, students and many others use it as a guide in a matter related. Often, popular articles are written by journalists and reporters to produce articles that are published in their publications. Readers should be wise to analyze the information provided because academic articles and popular articles have different objectives. As an example of popular articles published for an increase sales and attract readers to buy their publications and we could hardly see the author of popular articles will provide a reference in each of their articles. As such, it will be difficult for readers to get information from the original writings.
My literacy journey commenced at a young age. My story begins with the typical bed time stories and slowly progresses into complex novels. Some points in my literacy journey have made me admire the written word but other times literacy frustrated me. These ups and downs within my story have made me the person I am today. My parents noticed that my reading was not up to par with other children in kindergarten and I was diagnosed with mild dyslexia at the age of five. My parents provided me a reading mentor named Mrs. Mandeville who has shaped my literacy journey in many ways. Events in my childhood have shaped my literacy in various ways.
The article was effective because of the use of examples to help readers relate to research that many would otherwise find boring.
Having the author’s purpose is vital to knowing how informative, opinionated, or factual the article ...
The first question to ask when you read an article is the one with the most obvious answer: “Who wrote this?” This is the rhetor, and it has two parts: the author, the one who actually sat down to write the piece and whose name’s at the top of the page; and the others, those that helped the author by adding to their argument through evidence or support (Grant-Davie 269). As high school students preparing to enter the wonderful world of college research papers, it’s important to understand who’s making the points you reference in your own work, and you can do that by analyzing the rhetors. An exam...
My ongoing journey of literacy began in 1993. I was four years old. The memories I have of my first few years of school is very blurred, as they happened over twenty years ago. However, these early years of my life is where I believe my literacy journey began to take form.
Throughout my childhood I was never very good at reading. It was something I always struggled with and I grew to not like reading because of this. As a child my mom and dad would read books to me before I went to bed and I always enjoyed looking at the pictures and listening. Then, as I got older my mom would have me begin to read with her out loud. I did not like this because I was not a good reader and I would get so frustrated. During this time I would struggle greatly with reading the pages fluently, I also would mix up some of the letters at times. I also struggled with comprehension, as I got older. My mom would make me read the Junie B. Jones books by myself and then I would have to tell her what happened. Most
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
My relationship with literacy began when I started elementary school and that was the first starting point of my positive relationship with literacy. I really started to grow as a reader and writer throughout my middle school and high school years. Throughout my years of going to school I had many positive experiences that shaped my view of literacy today. My literacy skills have also enhanced throughout my educational years.
I believe the journal article I have chosen is credible because, peer reviewed journals are considered as the basis of academic research and professional knowledge. They present information that is in a clear and concise fashion, as a result leading to a high level of credibility. Also, the care and effort it takes to develop a publishable manuscript means it can be months between the time research is conducted and the results are even submitted for publication (Solomon, 2007). This indicates that time and effort has been put in the journal article to make the information that is being conveying to the audience authentic and that only the highest quality of research is published. The journal article that I have chose...
According to Dostal and Hanley (2009), emergent literacy is a slow and continual process that occurs from birth until a child can read and write in the ‘traditional’ sense. It incorporates all parts of language, such as viewing, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emergent literacy skills and understanding can be facilitated in kindergarten and pre-primary through carefully organised routines, transitions, and learning centres, such as the science centre, writing centre, and socio-dramatic play centre. Emergent literacy can also be developed through the use of teaching strategies such as a language experience and shared reading.
A comprehensive approach to literacy instruction is when reading and writing are integrated. This happens by connecting reading, writing, comprehension, and good children’s literature. A comprehensive approach to literacy should focus on the many different aspects of reading and writing in order to improve literacy instruction. This includes teachers supporting a comprehensive literacy instructional program by providing developmentally appropriate activities for children. Comprehensive literacy approaches incorporate meaning based skills for children by providing them with the environment needed for literacy experiences. This includes having a print rich classroom where children are exposed to charts, schedules, play related print, and
Nowadays, the popularity of these media is more to electronic media than printed media because their trying to dominate each other. If a child is a seed, then the education he receives is the water that helps him bloom into a flower. In a country of one billion almost half of the citizens are uneducated and illiterate. The thing that I feel strongly about and which should be eliminated is the lack of education and literacy.
