When do we achieve the ability to have responsibility and independence? Cognitive development changes over time in how people think, how they solve problems and how their capacities for memory and attention change. As children are entering their adolescent age, they begin to start formal operations. They develop the ability to think scientifically and apply the rigor of the scientific method to cognitive tasks. According to Piaget, the most relevant stage to cognitive development in formal operations. He also mentions that cognitive advances at each stage are reflected not only in the solutions that children’s devise for problems but also in their explanations for how they arrived at the solution. From Piaget research as parents, they can decide if their child is ready for the responsibility that comes with new decisions. Responsibility can be defined as the ability to control and manage one’s own life. We can define independence as the ability to take responsibility for one’s life without unnecessary reliance on the help of others. As parents and caregivers, it is the believe that we can make choices for their children in the believe that it is in their best interest and safety. However, part of growing up is the belief that one day we will be able to make choices for ourselves. If we went back to the chapter one on emerging adult, one of the key factor is being self-focused, during this period of time emerging adults are focused on themselves as they develop the knowledge, skills and self-understanding they will need for adult life. According to Steinburg, “Behavioral data have often made it appear that adolescents are poor decision-makers (i.e. their high-rates of participation in dangerous activities, automobile accidents, drug use and unprotected sex).
