Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born July 18,1918 in Mvezo, South Africa in a tiny village. Nelson was given the name “Nelson” at school when he was 7 years old. He was the only person in his family attended school. Both parents were illiterate. When Nelson was 12 years old his mother died, he had 3 sisters and 3 brothers. His father had 4 wives.Nelson later went on to college and started at the University college of Fort Hare for Bachelor of Arts degree,but did not complete his studies there because he joined a student protest,he completed his studies through the University of South Africa. He fought for the apartheid and was arrested in August 5, 1962. The CIA told South Africa where he was in 1962 later he was charged with 4 degree sabotage and treason. On June 12, 1964 he was sentenced life in prison, he ended up serving only 27 years in prison. He had the chance to get out of prison many years before on conditions,but he would not because he would rather no freedom then limited freedom. May 31, 1982 Nelson was transferred to Pollsmoor prison. He slept on a thin mat on a hard floor most of his 27 years in prison . He spent 18 out of 27 years in prision at the very brutal Robben Island Prison. He lived in a small cell and did not have plumbing or a bed. He was a black prisoner so he received very small rations of food and fewer privileges than the white prisoners.He was only allowed to see his wife and 2 kids every 6 months.In 1980 his friends started a “Free Nelson Mandela” campaign. In 1982 he was transferred to pollsmoor prison and was under maximum security. On February 11,1990 he was released. 100,000 blacks walked in a parade for him. As he was driving down the road many people jumping on his car in excitement that he was FREE!
Nelson was elected president of South Africa in 1994 .Being the first black president of South Africa.During his president he established human right,and political violence.He helped the living situations.He had brought more blacks back to South Africa.He did so many things to help everyone in his country.He also made a very strong government system, he made sure that there was no discrimination against whites and blacks.
