One of the most peculiar female figures of 1800s literature is Daisy Miller from the homonymous novella of the American-English writer Henry James.

Daisy Miller is a young lady from Schenectady, New York, travelling through Europe with her mother and brother. She acts on first instinct, naturally following her reflexes and acting on her feelings, she refuses to obey the rules of European society and can be considered a symbol of America's natural innocence and looser modes of custom.

From the first meeting between Mr Winterbourne, in whose point of view the story is told, and Daisy, the man meditates describing her in the following way:

"Certainly she was very charming; but how deucedly sociable! Was she simply a pretty girl from New York State? [...] Or was she also a designing, an audacious, an unscrupulous young person? [...] He was inclined to think Miss Daisy Miller was a flirt- a pretty American flirt." …show more content…

Eventually she becomes quite involved with an Italian man of questionable society named Giovanelli. Mrs Walker, an American woman who has accostumed to the Italian way of living, is shocked by their behaviour and tries to tell Daisy how improper it is to everyone's eyes. Despite this the young lively woman continues not to care.
From a discussion between Daisy and Mr. Witerbourne:
‘About the streets?’ [...] The Pincio is not the streets, either; and I, thank goodness, am not a young lady of this country. The young ladies of this country have a dreadfully poky time of it, so far as I can learn; I don’t see why I should change my habits for them.’
‘I am afraid your habits are those of a flirt,’ said Winterbourne gravely.
