As exhibited many times throughout this wonderful piece of writing that Shakespeare has given to us, love is a mysterious thing. Love can be either for the better, or the worse. Love should be the choice of you, yourself, and not forced upon you by others. As the famous quote “Love is not for the faint of heart.” states, love is not an easy thing. Love is very unpredictable and love is not for everyone. You must undergo heartache, failure and rejection in order to succeed with love. This quote is very prevalent in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Love is a powerful emotion, capable of turning reasonable people into fools. Out of love, ridiculous emotions arise, like jealousy and desperation. Love can shield us from the truth, narrowing a perspective to solely what the lover wants to see. Though beautiful and inspiring when requited, a love unreturned can be devastating and maddening. In his play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare comically explores the flaws and suffering of lovers. Four young Athenians: Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia, and Helena, are confronted by love’s challenge, one that becomes increasingly difficult with the interference of the fairy world. Through specific word choice and word order, a struggle between lovers is revealed throughout the play. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses descriptive diction to emphasize the impact love has on reality and one’s own rationality, and how society’s desperate pursuit to find love can turn even strong individuals into fools.

The overriding theme of the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare deals with the nature of love. Though true love seems to be held up as an ideal, false love is mostly what we are shown. Underneath his frantic comedy, Shakespeare seems to be asking the questions all lovers ask in the midst of their confusion: How do we know when love is real? How can we trust ourselves that love is real when we are so easily swayed by passion and romantic conventions? Some readers may sense bitterness behind the comedy, but will probably also recognize the truth behind Shakespeare's satire. Often, love leads us down blind alleys and makes us do things we regret later. The lovers within the scene, especially the men, are made to seem rather shallow. They change the objects of their affections, all the time swearing eternal love to one or the other. In this scene Shakespeare presents the idea that both false love and true love can prevail..
The Theme of Love in A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare In the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ many aspects of love are explored. In this essay I will be exploring how Shakespeare conveys the theme of love including illusion, confusion, escape, harmony and lust. Historically, it has been suggested that ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was written for a wedding, signifying the importance of love in this play, however there is no real evidence to prove this myth. Rather, the Lord Chamberlain’s men performed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on the London stage.
“Ay me! For aught that I could ever read, Could ever hear by tale or history, The course of true love never did run smooth; But either it was different in blood”( I.I.134-137). In the play, A “Midsummer’s Night Dream” author William Shakespeare outlines the theme, which is love. Shakespeare does this in using a comedic and innocuous tone to introduce love as a complex and sometimes problematic. Shakespeare does this by using four Literary Techniques: Symbolism, Setting, Imagery, and Allegory. In each act, Shakespeare presents one of all of these elements in the following ways: Love’s difficulty, Magic, and Dreams.
Have you ever heard or seen one of Shakespeare's beautiful plays? He is one of the most talented play writers that everyone still enjoys and adores him today. Have you ever been in love so much that you would do anything to be them? This is the type of love that Shakespeare so wonderfully displays in some of his plays. He can make even the toughest and biggest of people to cry because of how sad and beautiful his plays are. In the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare, Lysander says “The course of true love never did run smooth” which means love can be hard and strenuous work, not everyone will approve of your love, and love can be confusing.
Love plays a very significant role in this Shakespearian comedy, as it is the driving force of the play: Hermia and Lysander’s forbidden love and their choice to flee Athens is what sets the plot into motion. Love is also what drives many of the characters, and through readers’ perspectives, their actions may seem strange, even comical to us: from Helena pursuing Demetrius and risking her reputation, to fairy queen Titania falling in love with Bottom. However, all these things are done out of love. In conclusion, A Midsummer Night’s Dream displays the blindness of love and how it greatly contradicts with reason.

Love is only as strong as the people who share it. In William Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, there are relationships from all different viewpoints of love. Four Athenian lovers are caught in a web of love for the wrong person, according to fellow peevish characters. Along the story line of the play, one will be introduced to additional characters that try to be helpful by committing acts they presume will benefit the young lovers, but these characters actually create plot-twists. Also, there are other characters that have the authority to change whatever they feel is necessary without thinking twice. In a world such as the one Shakespeare creates in A Midsummer Night Dream, would you be intrigued by the magic that is set throughout the play or would you feel your heart and mind has been misled? Doctor Samuel Jackson was one of many that had a hard time understanding why Shakespeare gave this play its title. “I know not why Shakespeare calls this play a Midsummer Night’s Dream, when he so carefully informs us that it happened on the night proceeding May Day.” (Fleissner, 1997). I am sure the intelligent Shakespeare had his reasoning’s why he named this play what he did.
Shakespeare's Sources for A Midsummer Night's Dream. A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare's most-performed plays: a delightful comedy, but full of enough potential tragedy to avoid becoming saccharine. Much of that tragic possibility comes from Shakespeare's sources, as he directly acknowledges in Act V. The entertainments Philostrate proposes, all stories taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, show the unhappy endings all too likely to spring from tales like that of the four lovers of Shakespeare's play, or the strife-torn fairy rulers.
In the comedic romantic play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, four plebeians are fighting for fate and destiny in the city of Athens, Greece. Hermia, a strong willed young lady, defies her father’s orders to marry Demetrius, another Athenian man, and subsequently runs off to the woods to marry Lysander. However, when the lovers, Hermia and Lysander, run off, their plans are disrupted when they are told on by Helena, Demetrius's obsessive lover. At this moment, Lysander, after learning about the others disrupting their plans to elope, says “the course of true love never did run smooth” (28) Later, when the love potion is placed onto the lovers by Puck, the well known trickster, and the other fairies such as Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies , many mixups, and falsely wrong loving affections and emotions arise between the ‘love square’. “The course of true love never did run smooth” (28) is very evident with the relationships of Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius, and the hardships and disasters of the love potion.
