In a world such as the one Shakespeare creates in A Midsummer Night Dream, would you be intrigued by the magic that is set throughout the play or would you feel your heart and mind has been misled? Doctor Samuel Jackson was one of many that had a hard time understanding why Shakespeare gave this play its title. “I know not why Shakespeare calls this play a Midsummer Night’s Dream, when he so carefully informs us that it happened on the night proceeding May Day.” (Fleissner, 1997). I am sure the intelligent Shakespeare had his reasoning’s why he named this play what he did. The play has ten fairies throughout the play named: Oberon, Titania, Puck, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed, A Fairy, First Fairy, and Second Fairy. The main fairies Egeus wants his daughter to marry Demetrius only because he likes him better than Lysander. Egeus makes a request to Theseus (the Duck of Athens) to put his daughter to death if she does not follow his demand and marry Demetrius. Theseus did not agree with what Egeus was suggesting and told Hermia she would have to join the nunnery “To live a barren sister all your life, chanting faint hymns to the cold fruitless moon.” (Weller, 2007) After the meeting between Ageus, Hermia, Lysander, and Demetrius – Hermia and Lysander decides to run into the woods the next night to The more you beat me, the more I’ll love you. Treat me like you would treat a dog—kick me, hit me, neglect me, try to lose me. Just let me follow behind you, even though I’m not good enough for you.” (“A Midsummer Night Dream,” 2015) Demetrius responds saying “Don’t push it. Just looking at you makes me sick.”(“A Midsummer Night Dream,” 2015) This concerned Puck and wanted to fix the fighting by making Demetrius fall in love with Helena. Later on in the night, Lysander and Hermia were sleeping in the woods; Puck came upon them sleeping and his curiosity took over and could not figure out what the bicycle was, and decided to take it while squeezing the horn on the bicycle. This did not wake the Lysander. He then leaned down to Lysander (thinking it was Demetrious) and put love potion from the beautiful purple flower on his eyelids causing Lysander to fall in love with the first person he sees when he awakens. Lysander awakes to find Helena kneeling beside him. He finds himself madly in love with Helena. This of course confuses Helena because her heart is with Demetrious and Lysander’s heart is with Hermia. While this happens Hermia is still asleep. Lysander abandons Hermia while she is asleep in the woods to chase after the confused Helena begging for her
