The animated movie 101 Dalmatians, based on Dodie Smith’s ‘The Hundred and One Dalmatians’, produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, is considered to have saved Disney back in 1961 after so much time and money went into Sleeping Beauty which turned out to be a disaster, doing poorly in the box office and having put six million into the animation it was a huge let down for Walt Disney and the animators that worked on it. After Sleeping Beauty was released Walt Disney Animation Studios was in dire need to create something that would save them or it would be the end of Disney’s animation department altogether as they could not financially sustain, so with their very small budget of four million they were able to create the highest grossing film …show more content…

As mentioned before there was talk of the Walt Disney Animation Studios shutting down due to Sleeping Beauty doing badly that they could not financially sustain the animation department but Walt Disney was not willing to give up, so he talked Dodie Smith into allowing them to base an animation on her book ‘The Hundred and One Dalmatians’ and passed it on to his animation department to work on it. Walt Disney was not an active part in 101 Dalmatians due to Disney Land taking off as well as the live action movies and unfortunately becoming ill, so he left it up to the lead animator and story man Bill
