The dictionary defines the word “addiction” as “Habitual psychological and physiological dependence on a substance or practice beyond one's voluntary control.” When most people think of addiction, they think about people who are addicted to illegal drugs or cigarettes. When people are addicted to drugs, they all have some things in common. For example, addicts often experience the same withdrawal symptoms. Some of these symptoms include irritability, fatigue, insomnia, headache, and difficulty concentrating. Many people do not realize, however, that addictive substances expand far beyond illegal drugs and nicotine. Sucrose, more commonly known as table sugar, is a sweet tasting substance that many people are familiar with because of its large role in food. What many people are not familiar with, however, is how addictive sugar really is. Sugar is a highly addictive drug and is as harmful on the body and brain as benzoylmethylecgonine, more commonly referred to as cocaine. Sugar is an addictive substance because of the nerve pathways the brain takes when sugar is consumed, the withdrawal symptoms associated with people who eat sugar often and then stop eating it all together, and because of how it is chemically produced.
Before there is any research to prove whether sugar is addictive or not, addiction must be defined. This is a very difficult task because many scholars do not agree on what defines addiction. As the reader can see above, the dictionary defines addiction by having some sort of dependence on a substance beyond one’s voluntary control. However, addiction takes many different forms. People can be addicted to things such as sex and gambling. Even though this is true, the form of addiction that is associated with coca...

...f the examples they use relates back to the idea of bingeing. The researchers talk about a study that was done that stated that when cocaine was given to humans and laboratory animals with unlimited access, they both will administer the drug in repetitive episodes of “bingeing.” Avena, Rada, and Hoebel discovered that this was quite similar to sugar intake in their studies (25). What this is saying is that both groups would increase their overall intake. Behavioral depression was also found in the intermittent sugar-fed rats. Because of all of these factors, it can be argued that sugar is as addictive as cocaine based on the brain circuitry that is activated when it is consumed.
It is generally agreed that sugar is not healthy for the body. However, many people do not realize how harmful it actually is. Our bodies are designed to break down complex carbohydrates.
According to the article, Too Much Can Make Us Sick (http://www.sugarscience.org/too-much-can-make-us-sick/), “Heart disease. Diabetes. These chronic conditions are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Increasingly, scientists are focusing on a common set of underlying metabolic issues that raise people's risk for chronic disease. It turns out that the long-term overconsumption of added sugars is linked to many of these dysfunctions.” This means that people living today, have a lot more trouble with diseases because of our unhealthy sugar intake compared to the
Robert Lustig wrote a journal saying that sugar is addictive and a toxin. It says that it poisons the liver and it suppresses the dopamine Alcohol and tobacco are a little different. They affect the lives of not only the individual, but others around them. Drunk driving and abuse, as well as secondhand smoke, affects the lives of non drinkers and non smokers. The amount of sugar a person consumers, well, that’s a personal problem.”
You can find sugar in most foods. Everything from salad dressing to canned soup. Even the bread we eat has a high concentration of sugar. All of the sugar that America is intakes is starting to add up. Today two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight. These illnesses would be far less prevalent if we dialed back our consumption of sugar. Not to say that sugar is the main reason for diabetes, but it is definitely a determining factor. Eating too much sugar can cause our brains to feel foggy or out of it. This is because eating too much sugar forms free radicals in the brain’s membrane. This makes up our nerve cells and give us the ability to communicate, according to a recent UCLA study. Sugar can affect our ability to focus because it has addictive qualities. For example when we taste sugar it triggers something in our brain called Dopamine. Dopamine makes you crave certain things like, sugar, or alcohol. When you are fighting your craving over something your thought process gets interrupted and it’s hard for you to be focused. This “reward chemical” does not help you
HFCS can be habit forming since it is a sweet replacement for sugar and in his article Peretti mentions that David Kessler said “sugar, through its metabolisation by the gut and hence the brain, is extremely addictive, just like cigarettes or alcohol.” People enjoy the taste and because of this they consume large quantities, which lead to health factors such as: obesity, diabetes, heart problems, infertility, liver problems, and so on. Our limited perspective may cause us to lose sight of how much of a risk HFCS possesses.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Probably some of the most pleasurable and enjoyable memories of a person has to do with sweets. When thinking back to birthdays, there is always the memory of the wonderful cake that mother beautifully made and decorated with frosting and glazes. A typical night out with dad can be transformed into a magical evening with a trip to the ice cream parlor. A good wedding is never complete without the cutting of the splendid multi-level wedding cake, when the happy new couple gets to playfully shove and smear cake and white frosting into each other’s smiling faces. Everyone knows that as a child, the only good part about going to the dentist is getting the candy bar at the end of the visit. Why do some people get sick after eating too much suger? Some people do not even know that the abuse of sugar can lead to negative effects on your body. There is something strangely enjoyable and resplendent about the consumption of sugar. Sugar is a food substance that has managed to have large influence over our modern life, health and our history. Currently, “ Most Americans are consuming way too much — on average, nearly 66 pounds of added sugar per person, every year.” By being part of the American nation I can relate to the high consumption of sugar in my daily life. I have grown up with fast food restaurants all around me from Mcdonald's too Dairy Queen. In the 7th grade, I had my first small Oreo Cookies Blizard. I thought it was the most amazing most delicious thing I had ever eaten in the whole entire world. But little did I know I was consuming about 283 grams of sugar in one small cup. This was because I was not aware or educated of the nutrition and health conditions
Addictive drugs like nicotine and cocaine and heroin, all can rewire the brain to crave the satisfaction that these agents produce. The desire becomes so strong that it starts to take over the body and it no longer becomes for pleasure and it becomes a need for your body. Now likewise, some people argue that some foods have the same power and effects on people that drugs do, where some of these foods can alter the brain in a way that is resets the appetite and satisfaction threshold in a way that it’s out of reach, meaning a person can never have enough. The obesity levels these days semi-dangerous, so some doctors have conducted an experiment that tested the effects of some foods on the brain, where they took 12 obese men after they consumed two milkshakes, whit the same amount of calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates, and they were equally sweet. (Sifferlin 2013) On the other hand one milkshake had much higher glycemic index from the carbohydrates. After the a few hours the blood sugar levels went down leaving the men hungry again. But after they ate the region of the brain that is related to addictive drugs and behaviors was triggered. In this paper food addiction is discussed and shown that it is a real problem that further critical analysis and experiments should be conducted on such issue.
Introduction: Do you know what you’re putting in your body when drinking sugary drinks? Listen some of these ingredients; phosphoric acid, caffeine, high fructose corn syrup, natural and artificial flavor. These are reason why I think sugary drinks should be banned and how it damages the body.
We are all familiar with sugar. It is sweet, delicious, and addictive; yet only a few of us know that it is deadly. When it comes to sugar, it seems like most people are in the mind frame knowing that it could be bad for our health, but only a few are really taking the moderate amounts. In fact, as a whole population, each and everyone of us are still eating about 500 extra calories per day from sugar. Yes, that seems like an exaggerated number judging from the tiny sweet crystals we sprinkle on our coffee, but it is not. Sugar is not only present in the form of sweets and flavourings, it is hidden in all the processed foods we eat. We have heard about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt, but we know very little about the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. There still isn’t any warnings about sugar on our food labels, nor has there been any broadcasts on the serious damages it could do to our health. It has come to my concern during my research that few
Recent studies on parental involvement in education have found that there are many benefits for both the student and the adult when parents become involved in their children’s education. Without parent support, it is very difficult for a child to be motivated. From what I have seen growing up, only a small percentage of students are self-motivated, so it is absolutely vital that parents assist in the motivation process. I found this table to be particularly interesting and important.

Nevertheless, food addiction can create health issues that can affect an individual’s body. Even though, many individual may have such knowledge of overconsumption of food; however, many may choose to ignore the consequences that comes with food addiction. Becoming a food addict is harmful and dangerous to an individual’s health.
We can clearly see there 's a big issue present with the amount of sugar we 're consuming on a day to day basis. The issue of sugar 's negative impact on ourselves, our families and friends, and even society is concise, and with a bit of willpower preventable, yet sugar continues to cost us billions of dollars worldwide mainly because of the strain being put on our health-care systems due to the countless number of health-related diseases such as the obvious; coronary heart disease, type-two diabetes, contributing to world wide obesity, and encephalopathy (brain disease or disturbance caused by numerous reasons including increased glucose levels in the blood, or to put simply the over consumption of sugar.) All of these health issues are ultimately caused by a diet that contains an excessive intake of sugar which has time after time been linked to serious health issues that are completely preventable.
