The Reputation of Sororities There are many different preconceived ideas about what it means to be in a sorority, and many of them are not good things. When I was in high school, if I heard the words “sorority sister” I would immediately think of drunk party girls who was most likely failing all their classes. That was my preconceived idea of what it meant to be a member of these groups, but after I have encountered various members of sororities, I know now that I was wrong. A sorority is defined as a social group for females that are in college. There are very many different sororities all over the United States, and they can be distinguished by the Greek letters that make up their name. In the movie “The House Bunny” a former playboy bunny turns the “unpopular sorority into the stereotypical party girls. The movie “Sorority Boys” also portrays that sorority sisters are snobby girls. “Most Americans, even those non-Greeks who have attended American colleges with Greek systems, know little about the inner workings of these groups—except perhaps for what has been portrayed in movies.” (DeSantis) One could go their whole life and always think that there is nothing more to sororities than partying, because the closest they have gotten to a sorority is through the …show more content…

Like any other group, being in a sorority does have its fees. Kansas State’s website explains “The average cost the first year of joining a sorority is $1,614 a year. This first year has a higher level of costs due to one-time expenses and fees. The average annual cost of sorority membership for a member who lives in the sorority chapter house is $5,707 a year. This cost includes all membership fees as well as room and board. For comparison, the cost of living in a residence hall double room with a 15-meal dining plan is $7,660.” (Kansas State University) I found it to be really interesting that it was actually cheaper to live in a sorority house than it would be to live on campus. Most of the dues one pays to be in a sorority also helps towards their philanthropy, and why wouldn’t you want your money to go to a good cause. There are dues to be in a sorority, but I personally think it would be worth it. To join a sorority is a big commitment, but it will not consume all your time. I used to think that if you joined a sorority that your life as a college student would revolve being a sister. Although members do need to be involved in activities, I have seen how relaxed and understanding other members are if you cannot make it to an event.
