(The average american adult consumes this much media daily/ the media influences our lives heavily). In the past fifty years as our ideals have changed and gender roles have began to shift, the media still encourages old fashioned values. Information spreads so quickly and can be accessed right at our fingertips. Many things influence how we view each other, but the media is the most powerful of these. Mass media influences how we see ourselves and others, the misrepresentation of our lives causes us to see each other in unfair ways. An unrealistic image is painted by the media. The media perceives men as the cultural standard. Women are underrepresented and therefore seen as unimportant. On television there is one woman for every two men, but equal representation is more than just a ratio. If a woman is represented as an object, or someone who’s sole purpose is only to serve a man, she isn’t being represented in a fair or equal manner. If a woman is being over-sexualized, she isn’t being represented fairly. Over-sexualization isn’t something that always comes with sexual content. Nudity does not need to be sexualized. Although it is wrong to impose gender roles, there is nothing wrong with accepting them. If a woman wants to stay home with her children, that is her decision, just as it’s a man’s decision if he would like to stay at home with his children. Everyone has the right to do whatever they would like, it is our responsibility to accept them for these decisions. What influence does the media have on us? Whether we see it through video games or through television, the imposition of gender roles and sexism through the media relates directly to our gendered attitudes. If a young woman sees woman being underrepresented in television, she may now feel that she is underappreciated or
