Amy Tan, a famous Chinese American writer explores the mother-children relationships in the Joy Luck Club by focusing on the stories of four mothers and their daughters. It is a well-known novel read and raised mass attention all over the world, especially among the Chinese Americans. The reason behind the success is its clashes between the traditional mothers and new generation children. It also touches the immigrants who come to new land for a better life. The early immigrants of Chinese Americans suffer great difficulties because of political and economical upheavals and conserve their old culture and values. However, the American born Chinese share the same values and lifestyles as young Americans, even though they have the black hairs and yellow skins as their mothers. It is ironical and also understandable that they know too little about China. The novel resonates with many immigrants both the early immigrants and the new generations. It is like a life story and makes Chinese Americans to reflect on the past and think about the present and plan for the future. The mothers in the novel have the same characteristics that are traditional and strict. Compared with American mothers who always encourage and respect their children, the Chinese mothers like to use harsh words and rules to raise their children.
