Individual Development What do you think life would be like if there was no originality? What makes independent thought so important? As we grow and learn about life and ourselves, we must figure out the unique path that will fulfill us most. Sometimes it seems like the easiest thing to do is just go with the crowd and follow others. This way we cannot be singled out, and are propelled through life. However, living life this way does not allow room for any personal growth or expression. I have tried living like this in the past and sticking to the norm, but I was not being true to myself. I would follow my peers in the way I dressed, wore my hair, and even the way I spoke and acted. Through several years of this I found that it did not actually help me fit in at all. I was constantly awkward from being uncomfortable in my own skin and it was obvious to those around me. It was not until after high school that I found it in me to express myself. Emerson says, “Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string.” He is telling us that we each have a calling and sticking to your gut is essential. It is easy to be swayed by social pressures or being told what you are doing is wrong. There were many times when people I used to call friends would belittle me and make me feel inferior for being true to my individuality. I had to remove these people from my life so I could be myself and be happy. I had to be certain of myself and risk being alone, but in the end I have never been happier or healthier since this happened. Every person is different and deserves to be respected for their individuality, but no one can get to this point without first trusting themselves.
