Throughout this class there have been many moments I have vocalized both excitement in agreement or pounding my head in frustration while reading course material and discussions. Many of these moments would startle my wife, Denise, if she was in close proximity grabbing her attention and curiosity. However, I was not always able to stop my train of thought to completely fill her in on the on goings of the moment. Therefore, the option to discuss Spong’s suggestions with someone who was not in this course to complete the required service learning project was a great opportunity to do so. I read Spong’s experience in a service for recognition of the end of a marriage to Denise. I was not sure how she would react to this as Denise, herself, is divorced and her parents divorced when she was 10 years old. I asked her to tell me how she felt and to explain why. She stated her heart ached because she imagined how earth shattering that ceremony could be for all who was there, not just the couple. She reminded me with her own divorce most of her pain was due to knowing how much it impacted her family. There were many moments of silence with this discussion. Her divorce was bitter and had unfortunate consequences on family members. She decided she did not agree with Spong on this service. She would not have wanted to participate in this and she felt it would not have brought any closure. She also added her ex-husband would not have agreed to participate either as he did not show up for the annulment process. At the end of the discussion, she did want to add although it would not be something she would have chosen to do, maybe it would be appropriate for others.
