Throughout this class there have been many moments I have vocalized both excitement in agreement or pounding my head in frustration while reading course material and discussions. Many of these moments would startle my wife, Denise, if she was in close proximity grabbing her attention and curiosity. However, I was not always able to stop my train of thought to completely fill her in on the on goings of the moment. Therefore, the option to discuss Spong’s suggestions with someone who was not in this course to complete the required service learning project was a great opportunity to do so. Initially, I presented Denise an introduction to John Spong explaining how exactly he was brought to writing a book to present his arguments and recommendations. I was taught in any …show more content…
I read Spong’s experience in a service for recognition of the end of a marriage to Denise. I was not sure how she would react to this as Denise, herself, is divorced and her parents divorced when she was 10 years old. I asked her to tell me how she felt and to explain why. She stated her heart ached because she imagined how earth shattering that ceremony could be for all who was there, not just the couple. She reminded me with her own divorce most of her pain was due to knowing how much it impacted her family. There were many moments of silence with this discussion. Her divorce was bitter and had unfortunate consequences on family members. She decided she did not agree with Spong on this service. She would not have wanted to participate in this and she felt it would not have brought any closure. She also added her ex-husband would not have agreed to participate either as he did not show up for the annulment process. At the end of the discussion, she did want to add although it would not be something she would have chosen to do, maybe it would be appropriate for others. She did not feel it could be harmful to be an
Society considers divorce as a failure and a destruction to a family unit when in reality divorce should be considered normal considering that the majority of families are blended or single parent homes. Barbara Kingsolver, an american novelist and essayist states her thoughts about divorce, blended and broken families in her essay titled “Stone Soup.” She argues that no family is perfect and that all families have problems. She uses examples, statistics and metaphors to persuade her readers of what a true family is. She informs us based on her own life experiences: her values, changes, and choices which ended in her divorce.
In my 1109 class our task for eight weeks was to observe a tutor and writer working together during fifty minute sessions. This took place at the Writer’s Studio here on Newark’s OSU campus. The tutor I observed was Wyatt Bowman and the student was Adam Bielby. Ad...
Now, the number of ex-stepfamilies is increase so fast. Gootman (2012) focuses on those families or blended families who have gone through a divorce. She had done several interviews with people who stay in stepfamily to find out the answer for question “How do they deal with ex-stepfamilies?” The interview results shows that most people do not keep closed relationship with their ex-stepfamily member. Another survey result by the Pew Research Center shows that the second marriages have higher divorce rate than the first marriage (Ch 13, P415). Some of them broken their new relationship because their partner’s ex-steps. In the college students opinion, some of them never thinking let their stepparent be part of family; some of them considered let their stepparents to be...

This course is writing intensive; composing reflections, essays, and revisions to improve writing were all touched upon. My favorite piece of work is my short reflection on the Hazel Carby performance. She was remarkably fascinating to watch whether it was her medium of presentation or the messages she gave to the audience. This is probably the only piece, besides my reflection on Adichie or Colleen Carpenter: Ecology and Theology, where my personal views are shown. Her performance was confusing, but being able to gather the essential segments and construct a reflection best illustrates my skill in
Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
Introduction A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there, and what I ultimately learned from this experience. Information about this experience Change Point center is located in Hot Springs, Arkansas and is a non-profit organization. The role of the agency is to help women in crisis pregnancies as well as families that face crisis situations.
This reflective essay will lay emphasis on one of the learning needs I have developed during my two week taster placement in hospital. Reflection helps an individual build upon their skills and makes room for self-criticism as he or she can contemplate upon actions and make relevant changes (Taylor, 2000). I will be applying the “What”, “So what” and “Now what” model of reflection by Driscoll (2000) in this piece of work because it is a more coherent and comprehensible approach to follow when writing a reflective account and is also an easier guide to writing reflections. The learning need I chose to reflect on from my learning plan is having a better understanding of diabetes and the 6 basic medications used in treating the condition since it is a common illness on the ward I am have been allocated on for my first placement. The timescale set for achieving this objective was by the end of my two week placement that is from 27th January to 9th February and I achieved it with the help of a host of factors. In this assignment, all the names of the patients and wards have been omitted and indicated with letters and numbers for confidentiality reasons as stated in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct (2008). The paper will primarily touch on the type 2 diabetes and furthermore on the achievement on my learning need.
The movie “The Class Divided” was a very inspirational movie because it taught a lesson on discrimination and racism. The film covers Jane Elliot experience with the “eye-color” exercise and it shows how the participants responded to being a victim of discrimination. The teacher who came up with the exercise was a third grade –teacher that wanted to explain to her kids the reasons behind Martin Luther King death. She divided each class she taught up by their eye color and treated them according to whatever eye color was more superior that day. Her lesson influenced and inspired the younger kids and older adults because it taught them a life learning lesson that could stick with them for years to come.

To help me picture what it is like being a graphic designer, Sasha described a typical day at her job. At 9:00 am, she arrives at work and checks her emails. She admits to checking her email immediately after waking up, but does not reply to them until she has a chance to sit at her desk. After sending out general replies and follow-up emails, she makes her to-do list for the day. The list varies depending on the day and project; some days she works on reiterations of a graphic that will go on a poster while other days are dominated by meetings with the marketing or social media team. Sasha works on this list, executing as many items as she can until 5:00 pm. In the past, she would force herself to stay at work until the list was finished,
This lesson is designed to review and reinforce a few important concepts about plants (e.g. Needs, parts, sequence of planting) and to also guide the students through applying a few scientific inquiry (e.g. Making observations, experimentation, discussion, reflection, reporting results etc.). The students have previously planted corn and bean seeds and today’s lesson has provided the students a chance to see the results of the planted corn and bean seeds. Additionally, seeds have been planted under and growing under the following conditions: without water, and without soil. The students see the results of these seeds planted under these conditions for the past week. Two plants in particular have already been grown their growth has been
Throughout, our training session it could have been based around more of getting the concepts rather than actually presenting the training session to the audience. As, the training session consequently was made particularly comprised on my concepts and theories to actually teach the audience what the subject was on. Research have shown, that a pragmatic way to make training session to be more educational would be to include role plays, case studies and real-life examples (Beuder,
...rks. In a word, the MA experience was considered to be a bridge that combines the student learning with working skills, it would be of great help for my future career.
