Sweden, Germany, Scotland, and England are all countries from which my ancestors derived from. All of these ethnicities come together to form the two sides of my family that are living today. On my mom’s side of the family, her ancestors came from Germany, Ireland, and Sweden. On my dad’s side, his ancestors came from Sweden and England.
The Skelton’s (my dad’s side of the family) immigrated from Sweden to England and then to America during the 1700’s. An unusual person from the Skelton side of the family is John Skelton. John was from England, and he wrote and recited poetry for England’s king at the time. John was seen more as a jester figure for the king. More recently was a guy by the name of Red Skelton. His real name was Richard, which is ironic because that is my dad’s name as well. Red Skelton was a comedian and hosted his own show called “The Red Skelton Show.” The Skelton’s came to America to farm. Many of my grandparents owned farms, mainly cattle farms, and some of the farms are still owned by family members.

The Banters moved to America to farm or work in factories. On the other hand, the Easleys started businesses and made decent amounts of money compared to the Banters. Although the Banters started out as the lower class, one individual made it to the top as an actress. Her name was Marjorie May Banter. Marjorie is four generations back, so quite a long time ago. The Easley’s also founded Ipava Illinois, a small town in fulton county. Most of both of the families grew up in Fulton county.
Although each family has their differences, they came together and formed the families that are living today. Throughout the history of America, there has always been a influx of Jews from Europe. Even though Emma Lazarus wrote her poem after the massive immigration of German Jews to America, her poem can be used to describe the Jewish Immigrants. Many German Jews arrived in New York " tired ... poor... [and] yearning to breathe free." While New York City was still a hub for German Jewish immigrants, some had also moved to Atlanta and more Western states. Several of the German Jewish families who immigrated to America will forever have their names etched into her history, through their central role as entrepreneurs in America's expanding clothing industry. They began from humble careers and worked their way up the proverbial food chain. Once settled in, these German Jews knew they had to take advantage of their circumstances, past experiences and ability to "predict" the future in order to survive in the dog eat dog world of the Nineteenth Century. Although many of which did not have much startup capital, they managed to pay off their debts and move into the profit margin. For a job that can fabricate those results, many chose to become peddlers.
Each ethnicity has its own unique characteristics and knowledge from religion, language, food, art, music, and social traits; this is their cultural make- up. This Heritage tool is used to obtain a small fragment of family history, to help analyses their culture. As a child I remember hearing stories about a lost family fortune from my father’s side of the family. I never put a lot of stock into those stories, but evidently they were true. My father’s side was comprised of farmers for many generations. The Owens family owned thousands of acres of land in Kentucky, on which they farmed tobacco and raised horses and cattle. My father, Leland, blames his grandfather’s generation for whittling away the family’s money. Even with the loss of prestige of owning such an abundance of land, the family continued to farm. I suppose it is all they knew. They became good, working class farmers and small business owners, working on their modest-sized farms. But they did own the land which separates them from the working poor. The sizes of the farms dwindled over the generations; my father’s father, Harlan, owned about 30 acres in northern Kentucky. Harlan’s brother Ralph has expanded his wealth over time and now owns about 600 acres of land in Kentucky.
Annie’s mother and father, along with many Irish men and women at the time, struggled to make a healthy living in this country that they loved so dearly. Her father would go out searching for work to keep their growing family fed and clothed with a roof over their head (Lownsberry). Unfortunately, more often than not, the Moore family, along with many others, went hungry.
The primary cultural group from which is my ancestral heritage is Irish-Scottish. These two nationalities are similar, yet different. Ireland is an island off the west coast of Europe. Scotland is the land at the uppermost part of the United Kingdom. They both have a similar language which is unique, called Gaelic. The religion is divided between Protestant and Catholic. They celebrate many of the same holidays, and have many mutual traditions, cultures and values. I combine them as one-and-the-same in my family.

When you think about your family history and how far you can follow your family history back to the first time they arrived in the U.S you would be pretty amazed. When I start back to my family history on both of my parents side I can go as far back as my great-great grandparents on both sides. On my mom side her great grandmother was from a Caribbean island she later came to the U.S. because of my great-great grandfather wanted to live in Mississippi to work there to earn more money. Later my great grandfather and grandmother moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan with my grandfather who was from Michigan. My grandfather parents lived in the south when he was younger. Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer to self-discovery.
The definitions of a family today and a family in the past are far from similar. The definitions may have some similarities but they have changed dramatically in many more ways. 50 years ago, families had rules that were stricter and families were closer in the sense of a relationship. Although some families today are more distant from each other and have fewer rules to maintain order, there are still some that maintain the same styles of the families 50 years ago. Families have changed a lot but still have some similarities depending on their home-life.
My family and family history starts like most people’s. Two people fell in love, they had kids, their kids had kids and so on and so forth. But where we come from and who we are, is a completely different story. From our European roots, to the mixing of our blood once my family migrated to America, my family is quite complex but one that I am proud of and love greatly.
There are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture as an individual versus culture in your family, or even within your community. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs.
