This quote is full of emotion, and Mrs. Mallard is self reflecting on how blessed she is to have had this death occur. When she says “yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long” she is saying that if she kept on sustaining her life of being a controlled wife, her life would feel miserably long.“We Wear the Mask” talks about death in a less physical sense saying,“We smile, but O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise” (Dunbar 599). This quote has a depressing tone, by using repetition of the word “smile”, we know that they are living a fake life, and that their dream of equality is dead. Dunbar focuses on the the negatives of the situation, as if creating the scenario of a death using the words like “cries” and “tortured”.
