There are several reasons why I chose to write in the perception of Tom Buchanan, one of the main characters in the novel, The Great Gatsby. As stated before, Tom Buchanan is one of the main characters in the novel, he is immensely wealthy, and he is arrogant which makes it easier to write in his perception. In addition, he is a typical white American of the time possessing traits such as racism and sexism. Furthermore, his character helps us understand the major themes in the novel such as The Decline of the American Dream in the 1920’s and The Hollowness of the Upper Class. The journal that was written in the perspective of Tom Buchanan contains events such as the dinner with Nick, New York visit with Nick and Myrtle, Drinking at Gatsby’s with the Sloane’s, Gatsby coming over for dinner with the Buchanan’s, Gatsby’s death and what happened two years after Gatsby’s death. The techniques I used to illustrate Tom Buchanan’s personality included first person narrative, structure and tone. 3. Nick describes Tom Buchanan's as arrogant and aggressive. Not only in his appearance does represent this (aggressively leaning, beady eyes, riding clothes), but his demeanor does as well. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby many characters are not as they seem. The one character that intrigues me the most is James Gatsby. In the story Gatsby is always thought of as rich, confident, and very popular. However, when I paint a picture of him in my mind I see someone very different. In fact, I see the opposite of what everyone portrays him to be. I see someone who has very little confidence and who tries to fit in the best he can. There are several scenes in which this observation is very obvious to me. It is clear that Gatsby is not the man that everyone claims he is.

In this passage his use of language is used repetitively to convey Jordan Baker, Daisy and Tom Buchanan's lives. On the outside it may look like they all are living a perfect and ideal life, however Fitzgerald's illuminating use of language highlights how far from perfect their lives truly are.
In Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan and George Wilson are two characteristics that have very different social backgrounds. When reading this book I realized that these people broke the American dream in their time. They couldn 't be happy when all they did was chase money. Gatsby just wanted the love of his life back, so he did everything he could so that he could support her. I think that out of every single character, Gatsby 's choices were the most pure. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby was a remarkable book. Fitzgerald Made the characters of the book as real and as personal as possible. Three characteristics stood out in the novel to me. Tom’s Jealousy of Gatsby relationship with his wife, Gatsby’s lies about who he is and his life, and Daisy’s ways to tempt Gatsby to fall in love with her. The novel was inspired by the way he fell in love with his wife Zelda.
In The Great Gatsby, many individuals are involved in a struggle to find themselves and who they want to be. Personal identity is a very challenging thing to define. Everyone has an image in their mind of who they want to be. These images are usually very different from the actual identity of a person. In this novel, Jay Gatsby’s search or struggle for a new identity for himself is an ongoing journey. He has dedicated his entire life creating an image to impress Daisy Buchanan and to set himself into her society. This image does not necessarily depict who he is in reality.
Daisy was Nick’s second cousin once removed, and Tom Buchanan was Daisy’s hulking brute of a husband and classmate of Nick’s from college. Jordan Baker, a prominent tennis player of the time, was staying with Daisy and Tom. As they sat down and chatted, it was Jordan who mentioned Gatsby, saying that she had been to one of his extravagant parties that he held every weekend. The four sat down to dinner when Tom received a phone call, which Daisy suspected to be from Tom’s mistress. Afterwards, Daisy and Nick talked and Jordan and Tom went out to walk about the grounds. Daisy talked about her little daughter and how when she was born Tom was not even there and she had wished out loud that she would be a fool, for that was the only way she could ever be happy. The four met again at the house and then Jordan went to bed and Nick went home.
