There are several reasons why I chose to write in the perception of Tom Buchanan, one of the main characters in the novel, The Great Gatsby. As stated before, Tom Buchanan is one of the main characters in the novel, he is immensely wealthy, and he is arrogant which makes it easier to write in his perception. In addition, he is a typical white American of the time possessing traits such as racism and sexism. Furthermore, his character helps us understand the major themes in the novel such as The Decline of the American Dream in the 1920’s and The Hollowness of the Upper Class. The journal that was written in the perspective of Tom Buchanan contains events such as the dinner with Nick, New York visit with Nick and Myrtle, Drinking at Gatsby’s with the Sloane’s, Gatsby coming over for dinner with the Buchanan’s, Gatsby’s death and what happened two years after Gatsby’s death. The techniques I used to illustrate Tom Buchanan’s personality included first person narrative, structure and tone.
