Rape culture still exists
Rape culture is a setting in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality. Many women live in the fear of being raped while most men aren’t disturbed by this at all. Men see women as objects. Women are raised to have no power in relation to men. Women have just as much rights as men but they feel inferior due to societal beliefs. Women often get blamed for being raped. From whether they were drinking to what they were wearing. Although a plethora of people deny the existence of rape culture, it very much exists due to victim blaming, rape jokes, and favoring men.

Jokes about rape are always being posted on social media. These jokes make the rapists feel validated. I personally do not find them funny. People take the idea of The First Amendment (free speech) too lightly in my opinion. Just because you’re allowed to say something, doesn’t mean you should. It’s sad to think about the things people do for publicity. Per the criminal justice system statistics, only 344 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to the police. Joking about rape isn’t funny under any circumstances. There’s a difference between the survivor and the rapist being the joke. Often when victims speak up about being raped, they’re asked questions like: “What were you wearing?” “Did you drink too much?” women are treated like suspects when they speak up. Questions like that are just a few of the reasons to why rape culture still exists. Today’s society teaches women how to not get raped instead of teaching men not to rape. Earlier this week I was listening to Robin Thickes “blurred lines.” Robin Thicke says, “I know you want it, now he was close, tried to domesticate you, but you’re an animal baby, it’s in your nature.” It’s such a shame that this song went viral all around the world, when in fact, it derides the idea of rape
