Rape can be defined as the act of forceful penetration of private body organs without the permission of the victim. It is the act of forcing a person to have sexual relations without their consent. Rape culture can be defined as the culture in which it is normal for women to be raped and are blamed for their own assault because it is assumed that they provoked it in one way or the other. Rape is a way for a person to get what they want from the victim with power and force. Since men are the ones who are in pursuit of power, they are mostly the ones who are involved in rape.

Some women are raped and they do not know. Some reports are not taken seriously because it maybe is considered as nothing serious. Some men see it as normal and when it is reported, they just see it as “the norm” and do not see it as an important issue. The truth is that if a man rapes a woman and he feels good about it, if the tables were turned, he would not feel good when his own sister is raped, then the question is why? If it is normal to rape then why it is a big deal when the same guy’s sister is raped? There is the damage to the psyche of women. Some feel like they are less than human and actually feel inferior to men. Many feel like they are damaged goods and leave themselves to such subjugation. Many live in fear and even when they marry, it may continue to haunt them in varied ways. The perpetrators continue the culture and the practice continues. Perpetrators are not brought to justice. Many victims are not able to lead normal lives and may have nightmares throughout life. Many live disjointed lives. Rape, sexual abuse, and sexual assault, and sex work arising from economic hardships also put millions of girls in these situations and they do not usually have the power to negotiate the terms of sex (Shawn 68).
