Racism and Stereotypes
Over the years national surveys have shown that fewer and fewer people admit to having a racist view towards others. The results revealed the lack of acceptance among many Americans. Stereotypes lead to social categorization which is one of the main causes that lead to prejudice attitudes and racism. Because of racism and stereotypes segregation and violence occur which results in wars, race preference and categorization. To reduce the segregation and violence among our society we must implement more concise questionnaires, allow activists to speak to schools and other organizations, equal opportunities for all races, and start to educate our siblings or kids to not judge people by color. (McLeod,2008)
Like every other choice, being a stereotypical and racist person can have many disadvantages. What is a stereotypical, racist person? Well, the word stereotype is an over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people. Racism on the other hand is similar but instead of having a belief about other class groups, the focus is more on the race of an individual. The reasons the students provided was that African Americans are more lazy and less likely to succeed in the society we live in. The solution to this problem would be to have more accurate questionnaire evaluations since studies conducted in 1951 and 1967 show that the results were surprisingly positive but, the individual belief of racism and stereotypes remained the same. African Americans are mainly portrayed in the media as a pleasing aspect. Rather than focusing on the positive and good side to African Americans, the media would rather on the negatives. One of the main reasons why it is so easy to target an African American is because; it is so much harder to point the finger at a more dominant power ethnic group, Caucasians.
