Station Eleven is a novel that is about this epidemic call the Georgia flu and what life was like before and after the pandemic, and its follows this small group of actor and musician, as they navigate their new changed world.
We go through life not thinking about how we want to live our life, or what if we died the next day. We never really know when we are going to died, it’s not really in our hands, but what is in our hands is how people are going to remember us and how we live our lives. Reading Station Eleven was challenging at first to understand the concepts Mandel was trying to present. But as I actually be again to think about it not just read it because I had to, I understood it in a whole new light.
There is this quote from the book, “First we only want to be seen, but once we’re seen, that’s not enough anymore. After that, we want to be remembered” (Mandel 41). This quote has a lot of meaning to me, when I first read it I just dismissed it, but then I when back and though this is a very powerful statement that was being said. Being a freshman in college we want be seen, but it also the fact that when I graduate I want to be remember. As humans we want to be immorality, but deep down we know we are going to die eventually, but that is what makes us human. We need to be able to see that and then, we can see that we can be remember. Kristen’s tattoo read, “Survival is insufficient.” In the beginning of the novel, Station Eleven, there is a quote, “No one ever thinks they’re awful, even people who really actually are. It’s some sort of survival mechanism” (20 Mandel). Emily St. John Mandel portrays throughout the book how survival is insufficient, a repeating statement and theme. Arthur, Kristen, Tyler, Elizabeth, Jeevan, Clark, Miranda, in the book play a main role in this theme and connect into how survival and death is one of the greatest factors in the book. The novel contends that people, to be human, must accomplish something other than survive; they should live.
What idea does the author develop regarding how an important event can change your perspective? In the short story, “The First Day” by Edward P. Jones is about a little girl view on the people during her first day. Her mother prepare her gave her an unusually breakfast and clothes for her new school Seaton Elementary all the way down New Jersey Avenue. At the school Walker-Jones, a key event happens to her. She learns of an essential fact of her mother pervious past of her life and on how she acts. The daughter sees that the mother does not seem to like the teacher of her daughter new classroom. A significant event can changes how you use to see people from your old understanding into another completely different understanding of how you view them before.
In conclusion, the topics of societal breakdown, relationships, and society are the central pillars that make up the central narrative of Station Eleven. In post-apocalyptic literature, whether consciously or unconsciously, these make up the bulk of what the reader sees, hears, and experiences within the narrative itself. He learned over some time, that it is possible for one to retain separateness but keep individuality, and one can be a public person as well as a private person. He says that at first he wanted to be like everyone else (fit in), and only when he could think of himself as American it was than okay to be an individual in public society. He speaks of a man from Mexico who held on to Spanish: "For as long as he holds on to words, he can ignore how much else has changed his life" (35). The message is to not take words for granted and not to misuse words because they certainly do have meaning. For example, `brother' and `sister' is becoming a public repetition of words. The meaning will become lifeless. Words mean something when the voice takes control "the heart cannot contain!" (39). It forms an intimate sound.

She explains the economy and even politics are greatly affected because we all read “How to Kill a Mocking Bird.” Not only is every aspect of our lives a lie, we put sanctions on our imagination, which causes a negative living cycle for everyone. The main message of the book is that anybody can overcome anything with the right thoughts and traits. Societal change happens no matter where you are, however, how someone allows it to affect them remains determined by that person. Society maintains their own way of punishment, production of a particular type of person, and causes some to prevent from adapting to its evolving ways.
All in all, this is a great book that I’ve ever read in my life. It really inspires me. I do agree with Spike Lee that this book had change the way I thought and it changed the way I acted. Emily St. John Mandel’s book, “Station Eleven” and “The Giver” is a dystopian novel. These two books are widely creative and fictional. “Station Eleven” shows of how an epidemic can change society and “The Giver” shows the controlling and the government of how it can affect society. In the beginning of, “Station Eleven,” there is a leading actor, Arthur Leander, who is dying from a heart attack. This is just beginning of the epidemic, known as the Georgian Flu. It wipes out the whole civilization. The book then skips forward to the present to a woman, Kirsten, who was eight when she was on stage with Arthur Leander and is now trying to make her way in a world that 's been dealt with the epidemic. Kirsten doesn’t remember much of from this
The first thing that is apparent about this quote is the use of “we”. The word we use throughout the book is in place of I. This is directly related to the society in the novel that completely takes away individualism. The citizens of the setting do not have names and are not allowed to choose their jobs, friends, or even spouses. The character says “There is nothing left around us” which is directly related to the main character feeling alone.
